My local comic shop had the first issue of this on the rack when I went in last week and I picked it up because it looked intriguing. I had the same problem - I loved the art, I LOVED the poem, there were exceptional moments, but... I still had no idea what on earth was going on by the end. I thought maybe it was just me being a newbie comics reader that was the problem, so I'm glad to see others had the same problem! I do think I'll check out the trade, hopefully it will make more sense as a whole because I like the style and really want to like this book. Courtney, Nearly everyone I speak to who struggled early, but then read the four issues together, has been re-energized about Pretty Deadly! The trade is due out in April, so waiting for that and reading the series in its entirety is probably your best bet! (By the way, I love your new avatar, but I'm at a loss to place it; can you help me out?) I second what Bob says here. It's a hard book to understand at first. I couldn't figure anything out until the end of the 3rd book. After I started to get it I went back and read it all again and it made perfect sense. I really think it's the type of book that you need to absorb every panel and really think about what is going on in each one. I kind of have to jump back and forth between panels and fill in the blanks of what happened between each one. If you are interested in the art, get the trade in April. It'll probably be $10, since it's Image. I would definitely say to not read it digitally, significantly less enjoyable to me... but then again, I don't have an iPad.

I'll probably get the trade just for the art, I read issue one and put it down scratching my head. Plus I have East of West thats filling my western need right now.

So excited for the long-awaited fifth issue this week. I wants it. I WANTS IT, NOW. I know your feelings exactly. 1-4 felt like they were on schedule, but #5 has taken a while for sure.

Man, that was . . i feel like i need a smoke, after finishing that issue. Never have i been less bothered by having to read and then re-read (and re-read, and then re-read again) page after page. I'm not sure what Kelly Sue's trying to say half the time, and normally that would turn me off, but in this book i'm so entranced that i'm finding myself more-than happy to just roll with it and try and digest/unravel it later. Gorgeous end to the first arc.

I read all five issues and have started re-reading them. I enjoyed how the story had some mystery to it the first time around. So many stories hold your hand through everything, enjoyed having to pay a bit more attention and the second reading is a bit of a different experience knowing who the characters are and being more familiar with the over all plot. Kind of how you can watch momento twice and have a separate experience the second time around. I still can't figure out exactly what the exact details and specific meaning of the binder are, but unless I missed something I'm sure it's an element that will unravel throughout the ongoing story.

Emma Rios's art is absolutely gorgeous! And so is DeConnick's writing! However it is also very confusing and it reads much better in trade. Once I got to issue 3 I began to understand the plot, characters and themes much more. Every time I re-read them I will catch a hidden layer or hidden understanding that I didn't see before. Even when a friend and I spoke to DeConnick she agreed and showed us a couple things she had missed that Rios had added.
Overall, I'm a big fan and if you enjoy poetic writing and unconventional art it will be a great read!

... and if you can get passed the poetic writing and un-conventional art it will be a great read! For me, the poetic writing and unconventional art are exactly what makes this a great read.

I think I chose my words poorly. It's more that if you like poetic writing and unconventional art then you will love this book.

I bought the first issue and second issue a few months ago but i hadn't read them yet, then i went and bought the other three yesterday because of a Comixology sale, started reading the first one a few hours ago and before i knew it i read all of the issues.
The only other thing i've read from Kelly Sue was Captain Marvel, and while i also like that book very much i have to say that Pretty Deadly is the best thing i've read from her so far.
Even though she didn't make it easy for me to fully understand the first issue it became a lot clearer what was going on in the other issues...and the beautiful art didn't hurt either!

It is. Kelly Sue has said that she and Emma are working on vol 2, and that it's going to jump forward a bit to WWI-era, if I remember correctly. No scheduled release dates, yet, but hopefully 2015 sees some news on that front.

I'm still going to pick it up, but I'll have to re-read issues 1-5 to remember what the heck happened. I was starting to get worried, when issue 5 was delayed 2 months, now this.
