On the recent podcast (#250), Bob talked about the days of finding comics on a spin rack in your grocery store or what have you and how it has gone the way of the local comic shops. Being 42 and reading since the late 70s and actually collecting in the 80s I've seen/been a part of that transition. I love the idea there is a place I can go and be with "my people." But reflecting on the last two podcast on how we fans have created our own little pocket universe with our own little sub cultures, I realized in a way we may have made it harder for non geeks to join us.
I got back into comics about 4 yrs ago after being out during a 13 yr prison sentence...okay, I was married, but at times it felt like I was incarcerated. Back to the point...I was able to pick up where I left off and went back to my favorite comic shop in Austin named Dragon's Lair. I brought my girlfriend along and she was intimidated and overwhelmed by the culture. Eventually I dragged her to a starter con like Wizard World and she has become an avid comic reader herself. I have "dragged" co-workers and friends to Dragon's Lair as well and was told they'd never had gone if I didn't invite them. I'm rambling on as I do, but my point is, show your local comic shop some love and invite friends. You never know if you might introduce someone to a whole new world or become friends as I have with the staff.
Dragon's Lair is celebrating their 30th anniversary this week and somehow I got in on their video (at the 2 min mark with my Deadpool t-shirt on FCBD). Made me realize how much I enjoy the camaraderie and wondered if anyone on the forums had the same kind of love for their LCS
