If you don't know what VR stands for then you are in for a hole new world.

VR stands for Virtually Reality and this isn't what we had 20 years ago. If you like me got your first VR experience at a gaming arcade with the thing you stood inside of with a huge heavy VR helmet on and a gun type thing in your hand with cables that would tangle you up if you turned around then you will know how far it has come since then. The delay between you moving your head and the helmet moving your vision is getting so good you can forget there is even one and soon there just won't be. I have the Samsung Gear VR for the Note 4 so the very first one and love it. There are heaps of new apps and games coming out all the time for it all the time and the ones I like work so well. I have a Bluetooth controller to get the real game experience and one of my favorite ones is a kart racing game. The speed of the karts are slow enough I don't get sick and it is so cool being able to look over your shoulder as a kart goes past. Well me going past them. There are heaps of horror games out there for it that will freak you out and make you want to get out of the world.
The reason I am telling you all about this is because the HTC Vive for Steam goes on pre order tomorrow and to me this seems like an awesome one to get. The Samsung I have is powered by Oculus so I will Imagen when the full Oculus Rift comes out it will have a good library of apps and games but because the Vive is with Steam there should be a nice list of real games that will be compatible. Also when the Rift comes out you will get a headset and a Xbox One controller with a USB adapter but the Vive has a headset with senses on it as well as 2 motion detectors to put in your room so it will help stop you running in to things around the room while using it. Also you get 2 hand held controllers one for each hand so your hands are viewable in the virtual world.
The Vive will be about $200 more then the Rift but I can see why and both are really expensive with the rift being over $1000 australian and $800 US but the big cost will be the computer to run it. At the moment you would have to have a very resent and top end gaming rig to run them and that isn't cheap.
There are cheaper options but you can tell the difference even between Google Cardboard and the Gear VR. My Gear VR was about $200 but the new one can be found for around $100. A Google Cardboard can be as little as $15 but for a good quality one don't pay more than $50 and that is expensive. If you want to try Google Cardboard you can do so right now with your phone. Just do a search in the app store on what ever phone you have and you will find apps.
This is a huge subject and I could go on but this is all just the beginning and as the units get cheaper and better more people will be getting them. Sony has one comming for the PS4 that will be low powered but still cool and LG has one that has some cool ideas as well.
