I just read Martian Manhunter #1 yesterday and dug it. However, I felt like a few things were a little unclear and off and needed to come somewhere in order to get my thoughts out there. Hopefully opening this up to discussion can help me decide if I want to continue with the series or not.
(THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE ISSUE!)
1. The first thing that struck me as a bit of a disappointment is the idea that J'onn is a "weapon of mass destruction" and was "sent here to fool and befriend humanity." I am not as familiar with Martian Manhunter but has that always been his backstory? I know the whole "last of his kind on his planet" thing and was hoping this series would be more about his homeworld before he became the last surviving being. So...is this a new status quo for the character? And how did people feel about it?
2. How many of the characters introduced here are we supposed to already know? I feel like the book throws a lot of names and characters at us but doesn't really introduce them as well as a #1 issue usually does. We have Pearl (a thief), whatever the creature is that kills the guy Pearl is trying to steal from, an FBI agent (Wessel), a disabled kid named Leo (who is possessed? I don't know his deal at all), and Helen Demoff (who Martian Manhunter asks to kill him). Are any of these characters established elsewhere in the Martian Manhunter lore? Helen in particular strikes me as someone we should know but I definitely do not know her at all.
3. The Mr. Biscuit sequences felt totally out of place given the story is about a large-scale alien invasion/terrorist attack. I completely agree with Bobby who said on the podcast this week that he thinks Mr. Biscuits is J'onn. That makes sense. But how does it tie into what's going on? I know this is probably a case of "wait and see," but it seemed like a lot of information to throw at us for a first issue, which is why I feel like there are parts of this book we should have already known beforehand.
I went ahead and downloaded the DC You Sampler from Comixology. I hope it sort of clears up some issues I have with the #1s I've been picking up. Anyway, if you are still reading this and have some thoughts on Martian Manhunter, throw them at me. I would love to work out what's all going on in this issue.
