I find Namor fascinating but have only read him when he pops up randomly in comics I'm already getting. I'd like to read a little more into him but need some suggestions for some stories where he really shines. Care to help me out?
I've read some xmen stories featuring him, and the avx event, the recent defenders series, classic daredevil and fantastic four appearances too

I would definitely make sure to ask Bob this question in his thread.
As far as me, I liked his time on Utopia in that X-Men run, which I think you've read.
For some classic stuff, Fantastic Four #4 is definitely a good start. The first run of Sub-Mariner from Roy Thomas/John Buscema is a great work of art. I would personally recommend the F4 102-104. It's one of my favorite looks into how the character works.
The Invaders stuff, also by Thomas, is a good look back at the WWII version of him, as written in the 70s.

Joe, Sorry that I'm late getting to this, as I meant to post something, but your initial question drifted off the first page...and then I plum forgot--sorry! Chris stepped in admirably with some picks that I'd have made myself, so I'll just throw in a few more. In 1988, Roy & Dann Thomas wrote a 12-issue maxi-series called "The Saga of the Sub-Mariner" which was a fun "biography" of Namor from his origins right up through the then-current story-line in The Avengers. (Roy Thomas would follow this up in 1990 with a 4-issue mini called "The Saga of the Original Human Torch", which was collected along with the Sub-Mariner series in a trade paperback that came out late last year.) Also from 1990, John Byrne would write and draw the first 25 issues of Namor, the Sub-Mariner, which had him defending the ocean depths from all manner of shenanigans, but in a nod to FF#9, by also using the riches of the deep to form a corporation to help combat them! A personal favorite of mine comes from the early-Seventies, when Bill Everett, the Sub-Mariner's creator, would return to write and (mostly) pencil a year's worth of stories that ran from issue #50 through #63. Mr. Everett's health was in decline, so there are some fill-in artists, but it was glorious to have him back:

I've honestly never read that run...I will have to go looking now! Thanks, Bob. Chris, Although it was 35 years after he created the Sub-Mariner, Bill Everett had lost nothing off his fastball! Those issues are usually available pretty cheaply, but they don't turn up often. Good luck on the hunt! ps) The Byrne run was well-respected in its time, but seems to have fallen by the wayside. sadly. rrr

Jim Hammond is my absolute favorite Marvel character. It's a crime in certain countries to be a giant fan of his and not have some submariner comics in one's longbox! I'm on the third issue now and I'm all in on this series already. The art is right up my alley and namors back story is one of my favorites that I have read. The part where he leaves his knife at the ship wreck and encounters people for the first time.......INCREDIBLE work!!
