I've recently had such great experiences, ones that made me feel giddy or surprised or just plain happy, and I wanted to share them, hoping that you guys will share as well.
Foregrounding this: I've had a crappy week, and I'm soon going to celebrate my first birthday after I've lost my mother, so I've needed some heartwarming.
As I've posted elsewhere in the forum, I'm currently teaching a superhero-themed college Comp. class. My husband is doing the same (after he got assigned a Comp. class at the last minute, and needed help class planning). I offered to guest lecture last Thursday, teaching them how to read and buy comics. For the last 20 minutes of class, my husband had them each pick a comic from my collection of single issues and collected editions, read it, and plan a blog post for homework. Two girls who had kind of been chatting in the corner for a lot of the class (big class, hard to manage) picked up Batgirl 35 and 36. As I was flitting about answering questions, I suddenly heard "She's on fake Tinder!!" and "Is that her boyfriend?!"
Two girls. Previously so uninterested in comics that they chatted through my lecture on Amazing Fantasy 15. Geeking out over Batgirl. My heart grew three sizes that day.
My second story involves my local (well, 45 minutes away... welcome to the rural South) comic shop. I've been doing business with this shop for about half a year now, possibly more. The owner of this store, Rob, has always treated me right. He gets me my Buffy, Ms. Marvel, Batgirl, Bitch Planet, and Squirrel Girl (and never judges me for my pull list), he tracks down anything I want, he gives me discounts. He's pretty fantastic.
Before him, I'd visited a comic shop in the same town, and it had been a nightmare, mostly because of one guy. When I asked for certain issues, he said they didn't have them and tried to convince me they hadn't shipped those comics yet. When I said I had the Marvel Unlimited app, so I was mostly looking for DC, Image, and other titles, he said I and my husband were everything that was wrong with comics, and we were reading comics wrong.
Okay, off that negativity... just giving some background info on my experience with comic shops. Fast forward to today. I was visiting Rob at the comic shop, I hadn't been able to get there in a month, so I had a huge list. My husband found some action figures, and I was grabbing a few other comics that weren't on my list... and suddenly Rob is adding a New 52 Greg Capullo Batgirl figurine into my bag. I said, "Oh, wait, I didn't get that," and he said, "I know. I got an extra when I ordered those in, and I thought you guys would like it. Happy Birthday." I'd mentioned it was my birthday coming up, and he remembered.
So... What are some of your heartwarming comics (or geek in general) stories?
