I'm reading mandrake too, I'm actually reading that entire king dynamite event. It's mandrake , flash Gordon, jungle jim, phantom and Prince valiant. All of them have been fantastic. Out of them all, phantom is my favorite. I had no plans to read this. But I grabbed phantom on a whim, and fell in love. Then I grabbed the other related books, I highly recommend them all. So so so fun and fresh.
To me, mamoas face and hair reminds me of namor more than Arthur. But his costume looks way more like the 90s aquaman

(Forgive me if I'm repeating myself, but I don't know if my last post posted)
I'm fully onboard with the entire King Dynamite line. I loved the Flash Gordon and Kings Watch series' that preceded it. Mandrake has been my favourite of the bunch thus far, but I agree that The Phantom is great too. Alas, I didn't really enjoy Prince Valiant #1. Definitely the weakest of the lot thus far. But, I'm definitely going to stick with it and all the other titles. I can't wait to see how they all thread together.

I'm so glad I can talk about this with someone, I didn't think anyone else was reading it. I have all the first issues, I haven't read Prince valiant yet but I'm about to right now. I have faith in all these books. Did you like jungle jim? I didn't think I would but it was so fun. Cool art too. I'm in love with mandrake as well, it definitely was the strongest out of the bunch, awesome cliff hanger too
My book of the week is phantom 2 by Peter David and Sal velleto, it's unrelated and published by Hermes press. So freakin good.
I also am IN LOVE with shield issue 3. Alan Davis is still an amazing artist. His Spiderman is awesome. That's how I like Spiderman to be drawn. For a long time I've resented how the current spidey artists drawn him. It's like the current guys can't draw hands and fingers right, they look weird to me. Alan Davis hit a home run.
Anyone else reading sirens by George Perez? It's plagued by giant gaps between issues, and due to its density it's hard to digest without reading the issues over a few times. But if you commit to it, it's worth it. It's right up my alley, and the art is ridiculously good. It's not everyone's cup of tea though. I think you have to be a die hard George Perez fan to enjoy this. If you are like me, this is definitely made for you.

Jungle Jim was a lot more fun than I expected. They seem to have put a nice little gang together and I'm intrigued to see what Jim himself is going to be like.
My other favourite comic at the moment is Lady Killer by Joelle Jones. Issue 3 out next week. I'm well excited!

Please do steph, I really am interested in your opinion on sirens. I value your opinion on things. Granted, people feel different than me but I feel that sirens is George Perez love letter to his hardcore fans. And three issues in, I have a better understanding of it all. I hope someone else here loves this like I do.

Lenny, My approach is similar; I'm just going to buy books that strike my fancy, whether through creative teams or characters, with no thought (well, maybe a smidge) about keeping a run going. I've been applying that logic to regular monthlies over the last few years, and it's served me well, although I do have less to talk about at the comics water cooler! Mr Bob, It is a necessity at this point. Main Events are off the menu, and I've stopped picking up First Issues lest I be tempted to collect until the end. I did Infinity, and Forever Evil, which were both solid. I ended my Crossover/Event purchasing with Battle Of The Atom. When these two events were announced there wasn't even a thought about whether or not I was going to participate but then some of the creative teams have enticed me. I'll read anything with Swamp Thing in it, but then I found out Swampy's Dad is writing the Convergence book. Luckily the DC books being on hiatus has freed up some funds so these events are unique. Do you think this might be a good testing ground for Events and Crossovers to be more creative team focussed using satellite titles as the main pull? Thinking on the Image topic you guys were discussing on yesterday's episode, as much as there is an Image bias when picking up independent books I believe the fact that Image can pull in top writers and artists is a big reason for their success. There are plenty of Image titles that don't sell an amazing amount, where as a lot of people will pick up a Kelly Sue Deconnick Ghost over at Dark Horse or an Alan Moore book over at Avatar. I also stopped after battle of atom but now that the secret wars is essentially the last of the Stan lee universe I will get it to close my collection

Normally, every time I listen to a Talking Comics show it gets me pumped and excited for comics. This time... as Bob would say, "not so much." Don't get me wrong, the show this week was great. But man oh man, hearing all that Battleworld talk had me cringing. This event is supposed to be WELCOMING to new readers? How's that possible when veteran readers can't even make heads or tails of it? I know all the information isn't available yet but from what I heard, that sounds like a confusing mess. I'm sure it will wind up being a case where you can pick up just about any book that catches your eye but trying to explain Battleworld to anyone currently not reading comics sounds like a massive endeavor. I do appreciate that you guys tried for those that are interested though; all it solidified for me is that I'm going to weather Battleworld like a storm and get back into picking up Marvel books after it's over. Maybe it's my decision to also sit-out on Convergence but it seems like the big two are actively trying to get me out of comics for a few months later this year. I know it's only two months but that's an eternity in today's culture. I am looking more forward to the aftermath more than I am the event. I will probably read the event, but I haven't decided if I will buy the single issues or wait until it is released on Marvel Unlimited. That being said I will probably pick up some of the books that catch my eye. I'm conflicted because there are some books I'm really enjoying that are going to be interupted during the event, namely Inhuman, spider-man, spider-woman, and uncanny x-men. But, I think if they do this right (Big if, I know) it will be a good thing for the Marvel Universe.

So far, the only books from this event I'll be getting are the main ones, Spider-Verse, Infinity Gauntlet and Runaways. Nothing else really appeals to me enough to drop extra money on.

Found the trashing of Rob Williams rather poor. A writer who has some solid gold coimcs in his past (Ordinary, Low Life, Titan, The Royals). Williams explained the revamping of Ms Fury as an attempt to do neither the 'fish out of water old character in new era' nor keep her in the original era (both of which a lot of pulp revival books attempt). It also had to be fitting to Dynamite's sensibilities because, faced with a market saturated by over-hyped Superhero books, they have to find what way they can to sell books. The series was pretty good for me, and yes I enjoyed the Mill's version too but don't think for one second that it would sell in the modern market. (A market largely created by decades of Superheroes killing everything in sight in as sadistic or uncaring a manner as possible but we'll ignore that).
So, how many of Williams works have Bob and Bobby read before coming out and slating him as 'not as smart' as Tarpe Mills?

They've discussed Royals in the past. You bash comics and such all the time, why can't they?

So, how many of Williams works have Bob and Bobby read before coming out and slating him as 'not as smart' as Tarpe Mills? To answer your rather condescending question. I've read a majority of his Marvel work including Ghost Rider, ASM, Uncanny X-Force, Revolutionary War and I've also read issues of his Miss Fury and Ghostbusters stuff. All of which I found uninspiring at best. Stephanie liked and enjoyed Royals. I read one issue and didn't connect with it. If you don't think that approx. 15 issues of work spread across multiple properties is enough for to know whether or not I like a writer then I'm sorry. But I don't throw my opinion out there without consideration and backup. If you enjoy his work that is fantastic. I would never tell you not to to. But it's our humble estimation that he doesn't know better than the creator of the Miss Fury character.
