I understand it probably wasn't meant in a bad way, but Bob mentioned that those telling people to relax are those who don't have that much passion for the property in the first place, then going on to reference "the movie that shall not be named". But I am someone who grew up, much like yourself with FF, worshipping the character in "the movie that shall not be named" and when I saw said movie, absolutely adored it. The fact that it keeps getting referred to as "the movie that shall not be named" is because people go into an uproar in defence of it, proof that there are those with a passion for and who love the property, the source material and how it was represented.
This isn't a measuring contest of "My passion is bigger than yours", it's all about taste and what each person personally gets from the character or property.
Movie adaptations are like cover versions of songs; Some might be great, some terrible, and every now and then there's one thats actually better. It's how the artist interprets the original for themselves. So if this Fantastic Four movie ditches the light, fun adventurous tone of the comics for a more serious one, but retains the family values as well as a more scientific approach to the adventure than a fun one, aren't they also core values to the FF? As you guys said, it's clear Josh Trank looked at the source material and just discarded some things. But what one person gets from the FF isn't always what the other gets.

Hey! It's 2014! Cool.
I think Bobs criticism comes from the fact that the property is dear to his heart in a way many other things aren't and so he wants a particular vision of that to be shared. Seeing that this isn't likely to be that vision but something taking license with the material has riled him. That's fair enough, it comes with the territory of the source material being so Important to him in a way, say I Zombie, isn't. Everyone has material they want treated a certain way due to their sheer passion for it.
Personally I though 'looks okay but jeez are they expecteing everyone to sit through the 'space disaster' origins AGAIN'? I think a lot of people will skip based on that alone. It just wasn't that interesting the first time.

ok uim listening to your podcast right now and i havent heard the whole thng but i have to protest, David Hasselhoff is not popular in germany, although it is a common misconception fueled by him thinking that he is, because apparently in his mind he is solely responsible for the merge of West and East Germany. rant over

Valiant discussion!!! I recommend the first Eternal Warrior series to you, Bobby. Greg Pak writes it well. The second miniseries has Peter Milligan writing and Cary Nord on art. I like Nord, but I know you said he wasn't your cup of tea.
Thanks for the shoutout (Christopher Michael, here). Glad to contribute to the podcast, and hope I can eventually up it. You guys give me a ton of entertainment between the podcasts and the website. I view it as a new version of paying for a magazine subscription.

His fiancée is from Cardiff and he goes to Wales rugby matches. So the Hoff does have some merit!

The Days of Steel miniseries is good, but I don't think it is going to win over any new readers. Most of Milligan's Valiant stuff has been decent, but not stellar. Granted on Shadowman he was trying to save a sinking ship, but once End of Days came out I kind of lost interest. Give the keys to Kindt, Lemire, or Dysart for Shadowman. Back to Milligan, I think he has done best with Punk Mambo when he was able to tell a story that is purely new.

That is all.

Very enjoyable podcast. You guys braved the blizzards to bring us our comic chat and we appreciate that!
I loved the new section where you all give verdicts on the same book. Great to hear you talk about stuff you don't necessarily love. I hope this feature sticks.
Also, I have no investment in Fantastic Four, but I feel your pain on the new movie. As a huge Transformers comics fan I wince every time Optimus Prime says things like 'give me your face!' and 'I'll kill them all!!!' In the live action movies. That ain't Prime... And it's got nothing to do with the comics I love.
