Here's the thing about the Edgar Wright Ant Man thing: By all accounts, the disagreement between Wright and Marvel was over the story of the film, and after having seen The World's End, I think I'd have to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt. If his script for Ant Man had as much WTF-bu-not-in-a-good-way as The World's End, I thing we may have dodged a bullet.
During the Secret Wars segment, people were saying the phrase "new readers" so much it was coming out as one word.

maybe we should start an "in memoriam" thread in the marvel board for who we think falls off the pizza.... All I know is I saw the picture with 3 or 4 captain americas on it and was like "so it's like spider-verse, but with all the characters instead of just spider man?"
if the rocket raccoon and spider man 2099 books come out the other side in worse shape, that may be the end of my marvel reading though. I only read a couple anyway aside from the spider-verse thing (all of which are dropping off at the end of the event), but still over the last year I went from 8 or 9 marvel books down to 3 (including Moon Knight), so I'm not optimistic.
It could be the best thing ever or a disaster to end all disasters... at least they have the chutzpah to try it I guess.

I feel like and hope that this year will be Marvel's most humbling year (Exluding Avengers 2 of course because we all know that its going to be amazing)
Over the past few months to a year, I have very much gotten the vibe that Marvel could have gotten away with murder. I'm speaking from both talking with retailers and customers and friends as well as podcasts and forums and articles and comment sections etc, this isn't a personal view but just what I have seen. Any bad press gets shoved under the rug and is overshadowed by some other new announcement. All the bad is ignored because "Marvel is the best!"
Because they know how to market themselves.
Then the Ant-Man trailer came out. I have never heard such a letdown reaction to a trailer. Sure there was some excitement, but the overal vibe was a resounding "meh".
Now Secret Wars. Again, in the past couple years, whenever Marvel announces an event there's nothing but, not even anger, but just tiredness. I just wish the general comic reading audience would stop buying them. Because there seems to be this attitude of "This even is going to be stupid. I want to see how stupid". If you don't like something, don't support it and eventually it will stop happening. Its like the misbehaving kid at school; Ignore him and he'll stop. We should be buying comics because we enjoy reading them, not because we feel like we have to be in the loop. Marketing isn't everything. Storytelling is. I really wish Marvel could see that we all love and want good stories, and they give us comics with that. Yet they put all the focus on the Michael Bay, in your face, great big punch up spectacles. Which sure, may be fun at the time. But you don't hear people reminiscing about Infinity and talking about how much they love reading it. Ms Marvel on the other hand gets that love and passion. And sells out every single month. I still see copies of Fear Itself at my local store.
Oh well. viva la Batman

Best show in ages (sorry the 9 hours of awards was just a slog too far), especially Stephanie's reactions to Secret Bores. Take those marvel bucks and throw them at the indies... way better comics and treatment of readers there. The only Marvel book I get atm is Silver Surfer and it seems baffling to me they want to nix that simply so we can have Planet Infinity Secret Gauntlet Bobbins Bun-fight IV but hey-ho... always a new Image or Graphic Novel can get my money. Marvel will roll on, new innocents will get caught in their perpetual grinder, others will go try out new stuff rather than see Tony row with Capt row with Bruce while beating Ultron for the X'teenth time.
Maybe the team can do a little focus on Grindhouse (second 'season' mid-run atm over at Dark Horse) in penance for getting Alex Di Campi's gender wrong. Tis really good.

Ok.....here's my thoughts...first, I'm kind of excited for Secret Wars, I read the X-books, I read Thor, Spiderman, Hulk (although that's really high on the chopping block), Punisher, The Ultimates, Loki, and a few other books. Why, suddenly does that make me a bad guy? I actually enjoyed Fear Itself and Original Sin, Age of Apocolypse and Civil War and Dark Reign. There's been some I havent, from Axis to Inhumanity. And I voted with my dollar, if I liked it, I bought tie-ins (if I wanted to), if I didn't like it, I didn't buy anything. I am having a little event fatigue too but if the story is good (in a personal opinion),why not buy it? Because it's Marvel and not the almighty Image, I should quit reading Marvel because it's the evil empire? Actually, I've always been contrarian, I rooted for the Undertaker over Hulk Hogan, I like Darth Vader & Thanos, so I guess I'll just have to be evil. This podcast has broadened my horizons, the books on the top of my pile are Nailbiter, Birthright, & Outcast, but it also has Thor and Amazing. I read what I enjoy, and I'm kind of tired of being told what I SHOULD enjoy. I don't like Manga or that style art, Im not a fan of Ben Templesmith, and I like Steve Dillion. I teach the kids I work with, that art & writing are personal, just because person A likes this artist and writer, and person B doesn't, that doesn't mean either is right or wrong. It's personal to them. Don't let anyone tell you what your tastes are. I've said it numerous times, The crews job is to give their OPINION on what they like or don't like. We listen, we agree, we disagree, we fuss, we cuss, we love, we give our opinions on the forums and Twitter. However, I would be careful on how much they poo-poo on stuff before it even comes out. I love Steph, but the snarkyness gets a little old after a while when she doesn't think something is good (specifically events). And when she leads off a discussion, and it's like that, it seems everyone else kind of follows suit, trying to avoid the argument of ougt '13 lol. Big credit to Bobby for reigning that back in and giving a counterpoint. Give peace a chance, and let me read what I want to read without feeling like I'm, ahem.. A "mindless follower", that I'm "ridiculous" or even "unfeeling". Maybe this Secret Wars thing will square everything up, we'll get the good books now to continue, they'll do even more Ms. marvels and Squirrel Girls, Jason Aaron, G. Willow, Al Ewing, and the other good writers and artists will have us on the edge of our seat. Maybe, just maybe, they'll get it right....but for God's sake, give it a chance or don't, but let me do it in peace

Maybe, just maybe, they'll get it right....but for God's sake, give it a chance or don't, but let me do it in peace I agree 100%! I am just finishing the spider-verse event, and while I have generally enjoyed it, I was kind of exhausted by it between keeping track of which books I needed and in which order I needed to read them (I found out last night the checklist had one or two out of order) and the sheer expense of it (this has been half my pull since the fall and all the books are 4-5 bucks each!) so I'm not really looking forward to the marvel books I do enjoy (rocket, moon knight & Spiderman 2099) taking a hiatus for an event I really don't have the stamina for. HOWEVER, that's my opinion and I hope it doesn't make the people who DO enjoy the events feel like I'm looking down on them because that's the last thing I would want to do. I don't think anyone should be disparaged for liking events or for being willing to give them a try. They just aren't my cup of tea these days, and this one in particular sounds too much like the event I'm just finishing to make me want to buy into it so soon. All that said, the beginning of that conversation did sound kind of uncomfortable and I was glad everyone was able to rope it back in and get everyone talking rationally about it because it started out sounding like it would devolve into some nerd rage and nerd rage counterpoint. Once it all settled down I thought it was a very good conversation but that first minute or two was a little tense

I've only gotten back into comics within the last few years and to me, reading Marvel has been like going to a party in college. You have the popular kids there--Wolverine, Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, Deadpool--but where I like to hang out is in the corner with the less cool but infinitely more interesting crowd--Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales (and Ganke of course), She Hulk, Daredevil, etc.. Hawkeye occasionally is there, but I never know if he's going to hang out with the cool kids or join us in the corner, if he shows up at all. After a little while at the party with me enjoying myself hanging out with the unpopular crowd, the loud frat guys show up--Original Sin, Infinity, Inhumanity, etc. These guys want everyone else in the room to be as drunk as they are and they always pull in the popular kids first to get them to drink with them, but thankfully they generally leave us uncool kids alone.
Marvel's announcement makes me feel like they are filling that entire party with the loud drunken frat guys--Secret Wars, Planet Hulk, Marvel Zombies, Age of Ultron, etc., etc. etc. etc. What was once me hanging out with a few people in the corner is gradually turning into a crowded space where I'm constantly getting elbowed by drunken frat guys who are yelling and screaming about everything changing forever and time running out. It's loud, it's obnoxious, and I'm getting to the point where even though this party has Ms. Marvel and Miles Morales, I don't want to be there.
But, like all parties, eventually all the really drunk frat guys pass out or go home, and at the end of the night, I can still hang out with a few select friends and tell them I'll see them tomorrow. I don't know what titles are going to make it out of this massive event that Marvel has planned, but I hope I still have a few unpopular kids that I can hang out with in the corner.
(I thought of all that in the shower, I hope some of it made sense)

was just looking at the picture above. who is the guy in the dead center, way in the back with an "8" on his chest? also, what's Shazam doing in the lower left corner? haha! (I know that's not Shazam, but it sure looks like that costume to me )

I'm excited for Secret Wars. I guess I'm one the few people in the world (but of course I'm not).
It does sometimes feel as though it's looked at as 'bad' to enjoy mainstream titles, and that annoys me. I can like very small AND very big things.

There is nothing wrong with pre-judging based on past experience. It's simply a reaction. It's not a final judgement on anything. Nor is it wrong to simply ignore something because they aren't your bag. That bag is largely based on past experience and even if its not (I don't have to read Tarrot to know its not for me) then its based on long built up tastes that have a founding. If you like Events, good for you, you're going to be reading the biggest selling thing that quarter / year. So youre in the MAJORITY. I think the majority can take a little boo'ing from the cheaep seats without taking it so personally.
Besides EVERYONE does it (the prejudging) - even the most pro-spandex memebers of TCP make 'good grief' remarks about books they haven't read or announcements from the Big 2. Stephanie just just slightly louder and more exasperated by it all. Personally I think 'no offence but' should just be pre-assumed and the podcast could cut 20 minutes of the endless exculpations and pre-apologies that they indulge in before going on to dislike something. Just say you dislike it, no need for 'I appreciate its some peoples thing but..' before every slight criticism.

I posted this over in the secret wars thread but thought I would share it with you guys and gals as well since we've been discussing it. Comics Alliance (sorry for linking elsewhere, BTW) has an interesting article speculating (or stating the obvious) about all the zones on battleworld. as event-fatigued as I am, I have to admit going through this list piqued my interest a bit. Has it won me over? not yet, but some of these areas/scenarios/potential stories has me curious and more interested than I was before. being a big fan of spider-man 2099 I was particularly interested in an entire area specifically set aside for 2099, especially since I started reading x-factor 20 last night and got to a point where Miguel says "there is no more 2099 as we know it" and I immediately shelved that book for later. I don't know if he's just talking about the fallout from spider-verse (what I thought at the time) or if he is talking about something to do with secret wars (a possibility now that I have seen the map and read that article), but I totally got the vibe he was about to spoil something I needed more info on first. there was also a one-page bit in one of the last few x-factors that showed most of the team as apocalypse's four horsemen at some point in the future (age of apocalypse is a huge area on the battleworld map!), and being a big x-factor fan this stuff is kicking me doubly hard in what I will call the "curiosity groin". not sure that is an apt metaphor or not, but it sounded funny in my head. as an aside, I have to wonder what Peter David has in his head. so far he made Siren into The Morrigan, Guido into the lord of hell, Madrox and Layla into farmers in Iowa (I think it was Iowa) and now he has a page with most of the current x-factor team as the four horsemen? Dude "retires" characters in style!
