So which comic cons are worth it? More importantly which comic cons still focus on comics? Where do the old time writers and artists frequent? JAlso has anyone been to any of the wizard world cons? The ads make them seem super commercial and bad, is that the way they actually are? So far the only bigish con I've been to is Baltimore which I loved. Consider comic confused...

The ads make them seem super commercial and bad, is that the way they actually are? So far the only bigish con I've been to is Baltimore which I loved. Consider comic confused... Some people like Wizard World, but let me try my best to explain the shitty side of them and why I actively avoid their shows like the plague... Wizard World sees a show gaining popularity in a certain city and automatically their greedy little ears perk up and go "Oh! Maybe we can buy that!" and then they reach out and try to acquire the convention from the showrunners. Many shows turn them down because Wizard World runs shows into the ground, so out of spite, WW then sets up shop in the same town, in the same convention center and then they set THEIR show to take place immediately before the regular smalltown con and then try to steal all of their business by bringing in wrestlers, celebrities and all that. THEN after they've exhausted their budget with that stuff, they invite comic creators in and stick them in the corner where MAYBE some fans will come by. They treat the creators like dirt because they're not part of the WWE and they get charged a LOT for booths that don't make them any money. They're a really horrible business and I actively try to let as many people as possible know this so that they don't give their money to them. With that being said, HeroesCon in North Carolina is hands down one of my favourite shows ever. Emerald City in Seattle is up there as well. Baltimore and Boston are excellent (although Boston can be an expensive city to visit). C2E2 is run by the same people who do NYCC but in a better convention center and it winds up being an all-round much more worthwhile show to attend. Hope that helps!

based on their advertisements that's sort of what I was afraid of. I kept looking at the creator section of their various shows and was like "Wheres the comic book stuff at this comcon?"

That's my experience with them, exactly; it's pretty upsetting, to tell the truth. They've essentially muscled SacCon (our tiny local con that's been around since the 80s) out of the market, to the effect of instead of my having a choice between a few SacCons a year (at $8 admission or less, with local creators and vendors, an artist alley, good deals, and all the other advantages of small cons) or one giant, cosplay/celebrity-heavy WizWorldCon a year (at a truly ridiculous $45+ admission per day), I now have very little choice at'tall. Their business model is disturbing, to say the least. but hey, at least I get to go to Image Expo in a few weeks! Yay for being close to The Bay. : )

In Minneapolis, there's SpringCon and FallCon but other than that, I don't know too much about Kansas City or St. Louis, unfortunately. I'm sure someone else can answer though!

As a NC resident, I can't echo Steph's recommendation of Heroescon enough. We have a lot of shows around here, I've been to one the last three weekends. Charlottecomicon and NCComicon (Durham) are both good but seem to be out growing their venue (mainly because of cos-players). From what I understand, they are both taking steps to alleviate the space problems. But Heroes is dynamite. They DO NOT allow "pop culture" attendees (or as it referred to here, the wrestling effect) & artist alley is tremendous. Shelton always tries to bring in at least one MONSTER name, and they have cold stuff going on, from the kids artist contest to the late night art auction. I actually went to Raleigh comicon last weekend, not a cosplayer in site. Lol

NYCC is a good show, although is getting bigger and bigger with every single year, nevertheless they have great events and such going on (and this year they started Super Week, which are geeky events on the week prior and during NYCC in many parts of the city). Also as a response to "this is no longer a comic book" talk from many people, the same people behind NYCC created Special Edition: NYC which is a ONLY comic book show. I went and love it!
Other than those I haven't gone to other shows and in fact this year will be my first time at Emerald City Comic Con and Heroescon.

I still love NYCC but its getting way to big, this year I'm trying something different. Instead of an 3 day pass I'm going to try get a Thursday and Friday pass. I'm not even going to think about going Saturday. Special Edition: NYC was great last year and I'm really excited for them to release the dates for this year.

I'll add my vote for Heroescon as well. Very comic creator centric with very little if any 'other' media presence.
Plus this was the convention where my oldest son become famous by tripping Stan Lee. Good times.

The best UK convention is Thought Bubble in Leeds. Its packed full of creators from small press, to indie publishers right up to the big names, all mised up together and sat side by side. Plus film screenings, exhibitions and a disco! All in the wonderful north of England.

In Austin it's mainly Wizard World which has progressively gotten worse year after year. They started Cap City Comicon which was pretty decent (I got to hang out with Larry Hamma). Alamo City Comicon in San Antonio was awesome this past year from what I heard (wasn't able to attend) so I might go check that one out this year. Whoever is running Wizard World Austin needs to pull their head out and not schedule it on the same weekend as the Austin City Limits music festival. All of the bigger name guest cancelled last minute.

Had a great time yesterday!
It was a bit too crowded for me, didn't really get the chance to see as much as i would've liked, but other than that it was a awesome experience.I bought some comics and pop vinyl figures, played some games, and saw a couple of cool guests(Gus from Breaking Bad!).And SO MUCH COSPLAY!Not a cosplay guy myself, but i liked seeing so many awesome costumes. Don't know if i'll be going to more cons in the future, but i really enjoyed this one.
