So it seems Jared Leto is close to signing a deal to be the next Joker. Its currently for Suicide Squad but we can assume it will be for a multi film run in the new DC cinematic universe. What do people think of this? Already seems to be a big divide as to how this will turn out.

Not a DC guy, and know nothing of Suicide Squad, but I think if he does sign, give him a chance. He's obviously a comic fan and to me that's the biggest perk, a true love of the genre.

I'm of two minds on this. First off, after seeing Leto's performance in the Dallas Buyer's Club, I think that he is absolutely capable of pulling this off and a spectrum of other roles that people might have dismissed him for prior to DBC. He's got the chops to do it obviously.
Where I get skeptical is that, despite the inspired choice to cast him, I worry that it's inspired by Heath Ledger's portrayal and the desire to recreate that same magic, as they are both similar actors, being given this role at similar points in their careers (where they make a turn from ingenue-type roles to insightfully-explored character roles).
That being said, if this IS the route they go, I just hope the script is something that can bring a new aspect to the character and that they don't try to rehash what happened in the Dark Knight. Regardless, I'm in for an excited viewing.

I'm partly only commenting just because the leads thread on this section is always the Fantastic 4 and nobody needs to be constantly reminded about that.
But I'm pretty excited about this choice.
My reaction to everything in the DCCU camp is overwhelmingly positive but I've always known that the second a new Joker was cast, skeptisism would abound.
The obvious connection to make from Jared Leto cast as the Joker is "Will he live up to Heath Ledger?" or "Will he just be a rehash of Heath Ledger?"
The fact is this is now a DCCU, not a Nolan-Bat universe. Because thats what that was; a world where Batman existed. And the Joker in that was a representation of a Joker that would exist in that world. All the core values were there, just the delivery and portrayal were different. I'd call it an Elseworlds almost.
The DCCU is introducing everything. Literally EVERYTHING. Street based, cosmic, mythological, magical. And they are clearly taking even the finest details from the comics. Say what you want about MOS and the characterization, there was SO much (especially from the Krypton scenes) from the John Byrne Man of Steel comics, down to a robot that had like 5 seconds of screentime. Which is more than can be said for any Superman movie that has come before.
So if they are taking details from the comics, I have no doubt in my mind that this will be the comic Joker. Especially after the games, I fully expect chattering teeth and novelty guns. Even if it is more in like with Killing Joke than Animated Series Joker, it's still the comic book Joker.
But yeah, I'm super positive about this casting. Even if it is just a rumour.
