Seems that everything is getting the remake/reboot treatment these days. And while most seem to hate it, there is that argument that people keep tackling Shakespeare all these years later... I guess thats a fair point?
And there ARE remakes that have improved or built upon the original in amazing ways. John Carpenter's The Thing being the best example of this.
There are also movies that have a brilliant premise, but were just executed poorly.
So in the spirit of optimism and curiosity: What are some personal favourite remakes/reboots (don't be scared) and what is a movie you would actually like to see get a remake?
JC's The Thing is obvious first choice for obvious reasons. But my favourite remakes are:
Peter Jackson's King Kong (sorry Bob). The original being a classic and so on, this remake was a movie made out of love for the original by a guy who got into film because of the original and a movie that was begging for a remake after years of advancements in technology and film. But mostly I really love the mythology of the island in the remake and am really looking forward to the Skull Island film coming out.
Another favourite remake is Steven Spielberg's War of the World's. There are so many tense and suspensful moments in this showing the way people react in a crisis (in the worst and best ways). It gives me chills. The Tim Robbins scene obviously. The scene where they're hiding from the eye tentacle in the house. The mob trying to get into the car. The bodies in the river. Tom Cruise character singing to Dakota Fanning. I love it all.
Dredd is a reboot that was well deserved and perfectly executed. Just a shame most people didn't care enough to go see it. Such a great action movie though.
A movie I would love to see get a remake or reboot? Highlander. I know this movie is considered a cult classic, and there a movies like it that I love. But the first time I watched this I really wondered why it was so beloved. I did not like it. I'm not talking about the special effects. Special effects are meaningless when there are good performances and story. But it was the performances that really ruined it for me. And just and overall tone. But I love the story so much. It's a brilliant idea that I think could be fleshed out so much more today and I am so surprised it hasn't been done already. Maybe its because of the sequels and tv series that came out of it thats cursed it. But if Highlander got a remake I would definitely see it. In fact a new TV series would work too seeing as that seems to be the way to go these days.
