I'm going to put myself on the spot here and ask: Did anybody else enjoy this as much as I did?
First things first: I saw the new Transformers (little brother demanded it) and I did not like it. There was some fun to be had, but it was 3 hours too long and did everything else wrong in my opinion. Also I'm tired of children's movies dropping in the F word as if its a gag.
Second thing: Can I ask, since when were the Ninja Turtles considered to be a brilliant piece of cinema for adults? They are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's in the name.
I have heard every comic book guy and his dog say "It's ruining a classic" but last I checked the Ninja Turtles existed before the 90's movie. I grew up with that movie and loved it. But it is not the dark, violent, black and white original the comics were. Yet nobody claims that as the original. Just the kids cartoon and kids movie (key word being KIDS)
This movie is targeted at kids. And I walked out of it not only feeling entertained, but knowing that if I saw that as a kid, it would have been my favorite movie at the time. It was fun, full of jokes that were genuinely funny, action that wasn't as brutal and violent as other action/superhero movies kids would be seeing (Man of Steel, Transformers, Captain America: Winter Soldier) and also didn't' take advantage of its rating to throw in needless language. In fact I didn't notice it once. I would happily take a kid to that movie.
And I'm going to so bold as to say, tonally it is NO different from the early 90's movie. Same amount of action. Same amount of gags. Same jokes about pizza, cultural references, catchphrases etc.
I read a review the other day that I'll quote it, "The comedy-action mash-up is as weird as if the Dark Knight took a break from belting the Joker to plug Pizza Hut and bang out a hiphop beat on his nunchucks"
Since when the actual flip was the Ninja Turtles franchise The Dark Knight? All its ever been is pizza, jokes and hip hop. I'm not the only person who had the 1990 soundtrack. MC Hammer did the theme to that. And pizza abounded in that movie.
I'm going to recommend to EVERYBODY to see this movie. Seriously. If you grew up watching the cartoon, the movie, playing the Gameboy game, this is no different. The only criticism would be Megan Fox. She wasn't HORRIBLE, and this wasn't in tone with a Michael Bay "close up on short skirt low cut top" bonanza. She was okay. But Will Arnett and the Turtles stole the show.
And I'm going to say it, I laughed just as much and had just as much fun in this as I did Guardians of the Galaxy. Except this had no awkward "green whore" and "prick" moments.
In terms of not living up to expectations, nobody has a valid argument there. The 90's weren't the original Turtles. The comics were. This isn't the comics and as long as kids buy TMNT toys, it never will be. But its still fun as hell.
I can understand why somebody won't like the movie. Just like I hated Transformers, I can still see why somebody would love it. This is no different.
If anybody has a spare 100 minutes and has a place in their heart where the Turtles once lived, I recommend you go see this.
Also if anybody has a copy of the "The Unrealistic Expectations and Rules of Comic Book Franchises & Why Nothing Will Ever Live Up To Them", I would love a copy.
