So I was surprised going back through the archives and I found there was a top artists thread but I never saw that anyone did a favorite writers. And to clarify this is favorite writers not best writers. These are the writers who you enjoy reading not some long thought out list of every writer ever, this is meant to be a lighter, off the top of your head kind of thing. So what the hell mine are as follows:
5: Gail Simone Great stuff, always tries to keep an atmosphere of fun
4:Mark Waid I don't read everything he writes but if I see anything he's on it's always solid
3: Warren Ellis Transmet was my bible when I first read it, everything he write is always worth at least checking out, interesting takes on everything
2:Stan Lee Going through early Avengers stuff there just isn't any way I can snub the Stan with the Plan
1:Neil Gaiman Only author who I will, without question, buy anything with his name on.

My favourites(from the top of my head): BKV - Love his work on Runaways and Saga(of course!)and he also made me like the character of Dr. Strange, thanks to his miniseries The Oath.I have yet to read Y the Last Man though.
Greg Rucka - Probably my favourite writer at the moment.I mean come on, the guy made me love Cyclops! Everything i've read from him so far is amazing. His run on the Punisher, Gotham Central, Lazarus, great stuff! There recently was a sale on Comixology for the books that he wrote for Oni, Queen and Country and Stumptown, so i bought all of the volumes that were on sale, and what i've read so far is pretty great too.
Jason Aaron - This writer keeps impressing me with his work.He writes all different kind of genres, and all of it is great!Doesnt matter if its crime stuff(Scalped, Southern Bastards)crazy funny super hero stuff(Wolverine and the X-Men) or epic fantasy stuff(Thor God of Thunder).
Bill Willingham - Only books i've read from him were Fables and Fairest, but since Fables was the first comic i ever read that wasn't a superhero book, and since it created a love for more of those non superhero books i had to at least mention him.

I don't know whether it's the British perspective, but the holy trinity of writers for me are Moore, Gaiman and Morrison. Warren Ellis also comes close. Honourable mentions go to Jonathan Hickman, Rick Remender, Greg Rucka and Kelly Sue DeConnick.

I'm still discovering writers and figuring out who my favorites are, but I'd say Kieron Gillen and Neil Gaiman would be at the top of the list, with Mike Carey, Matt Fraction, BKV and Kelly Sue DeConnick close behind. I'm also becoming a big fan of Al Ewing.

Yeah I sort of like that, I think a different thread arguing the merrits of the overall quality of different writers is valid and should be discussed, but here it's sort of neat to just do off the cuff. Like maybe it's more honest if you can't think too much.

I thought this would be easy...
Mark Waid ----- Geoff Johns ------- Charles Soule ------ Jeff Lemire -------- Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
i don't read all their books, but I trust all these writers.

Although I love writers like Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker, I've been getting into writers who do the art on their books too, like Terry Moore, Becky Cloonan, and Jeff Lemire's creator-owned work. I feel you get a complete vision with these writer/artists, not to take anything away from those who do writing or art only as sometimes having multiple perspectives creates a greater whole, like with Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo on Batman.
One writer/artist that I've really enjoyed is Ken Garing, specially his limited series Planetoid from Image. It's stark yet beautiful and you can to how much meticulous thought went into creating the world (and also likely explains why final issues were delayed). Anyway, as someone who can't draw too well, I'm envious those those gifted with both writing words and drawing pictures well.

Ales Kot, Jonathan Hickman, Jason Aaron, Bendis as far as current 'mainstream' writers. Mark Waid is perhaps one of the best, as well. Morrison is a mind-F, and Warren Ellis is always good for a smartly-spun tale and thought-provoking material.
So yeah, I'm liking Marvel currently.
More and more, I'm getting into Noah van Sciver, Paul Pope, Alison Bechdel, and other cartoonists that are able to write the stories out through their own artwork.
I also really liked Dwyane McDuffie as far as legendary writers goes. Denny O'Neil, Alan Moore, John Byrne, CHris Claremont, Roy Thomas, there's so many!
