Hey! So, I am very much a Marvel girl, as you can probably tell if you look at my pull list every week, but I'm interested in dipping a toe in the DC waters. I'm going to check out Batgirl and Gotham Academy in October, and after Bobby talked about the Seven Soldiers book on the podcast I read the Zatanna and Klarion parts of the arc on Comixology and liked both of those characters. I am familiar with some of the Vertigo titles like Sandman and Lucifer, which also happen to be two of my all-time favorite titles. My tastes tend to mystical/magical fantasy and lighter young superhero stuff like Young Avengers. Any recommendations are welcome!

Seeing as how you liked Zatanna, there was a Zatanna series that ran for 16 issues until the start of the New 52 by Paul Dini and art mostly from Stéphane Roux that I enjoyed. It's collected in two trades that I think are still in print called Zatanna: Mistress of Magic, and Zatanna: Shades of the Past which collect the entire series. And for some darker magical fantasy sort of stuff, most of the Dark titles from the New 52 relaunch are quite good. Justice League Dark is good, especially when Jeff Lemire takes over with the second volume. Peter Milligan was on the book before that, his volume is ok but isn't great. I,Vampire by Joshua Hale Fialkov and Andrea Sorrentino is a dark vampire book that I will push on everybody I meet until I die. Demon Knights was great.
The Vertigo Hellblazer stuff is great, but some is skipable.

Courtney,
Simon is so spot on with his recommendation of the Paul Dini Zatanna...and I'm a bit jealous that he beat me to it!

I really loved Geoff Johns' run on Teen Titans back in the pre-New 52 universe. Other than that Vertigo's Madame Xanadu by Matt Wagner and Amy Reeder is incredible and right up the alley for mystical/magical fantasy. I recently picked up Marc Andreyko's Manhunter series too and that's pretty amazing so far. Gotham Central is always my go-to recommendation for the DC/comics sceptic as well.

Thank you all for the recs - these look great! I think I'll give the Zatanna series a try first since I already like that character.

Not a huge DC expert, but i'll second I Vampire and Gotham Central. Can also recommend Gail Simone's run of Secret Six.And as for Vertigo, i can definitely recommend Fables and Fairest, lots of magical fantasy stuff in those books.

Not sure if you're looking for current things rather than older books, but I think you'd probably like the John Ney Rieber & Peter Gross "Books of Magic" Vertigo series. Unfortunately Comixology only have a few issues so you'd have to hunt out the trades. I'm not much help on the current DCU though, I'm afraid.

Thanks once again for the suggestions - tundra, I've heard of Books of Magic and it definitely sounds like something I'd like, so I'll search out the trades. I think I've seen some at my local Half Price Books before.

Based on your tastes I would give the original Young Justice a whirl, its just such great fun and really captures the youthful spirit those characters had at that time in the DCU
