Creating a thread here for one of my most anticipated books of the summer. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' The Fade Out is their impressive next venture. It's got the feel of every other one of their collaborative works but still has an intriguing uniqueness to it. Just by reading the first issue (I got the magazine version), I can tell that this is truly a labour of love from both Brubaker and Phillips. This was one of my books of the week, how did you guys like it?

I have to admit that I'm always concerned when on the first page there is a profile list of the characters, but I was pleasantly surprised that the characters were very easy to pick-up on. I was worried it was going to be a prequel to a massive amount of confusion, much like Fractions Satellite Sam. I loved the art by Sean Phillips as well, so I'll definitely be picking up issue #2.

Haven't picked it up yet; I trade-waited on Fatale, even though I loved the hell out of it (no pun intended), and for whatever reason i'm like to do the same for this. Definitely on my radar, though! That magazine format version of the #1 sure did look purdy.
Speaking of Brubaker and Phillips, though, Fatale is the only thing of theirs that i've gotten to, as of yet. What do you guys think of their other stuff? What would you recommend I look into next of their already-completed series'?

My £0.02, I suspect it probably will read better in trades, but I'm too impatient for that and the first issue was a great scene-setter. As ever with this team great characters and atmosphere.

To be clear, I'm a huge Brubaker and Phillips fanboy. I have most of their work in either trades or single issues. Of all their work, I have enjoyed Fatale the most, which is saying something. Although I was excited to read The Fade Out, I had just finished the last issue of Fatale and thought I would miss the supernatural elements. But, they quickly hooked me in with that feel of a smokey bar, booze, and mystery coming off the page in the Fade Out.
If you like The Fade Out, I'd recommend Criminal. Each volume deals with different characters, but it mostly takes place in more modern day settings. I think the first volume, Coward, is being made into a movie (or TV show, can't remember). Their work on Sleeper is more superhero-focused but still has strong noir elements.

I loved this book, not normally a fan of the noir/spy stuff, but I picked it up based on the setting. Definitely getting added to my pull list.
