Bob suggested I check out the All New Invaders over on the Introductions thread, and I have. Loved it.
Got issues 1 thru 3 at Comixology. The intent (aside from just writing good stories) seems to be to integrate the Invaders into the current Marvel Universe, meaning not everything is a throwback to The Greatest War, not everything is a reference aimed at Golden Age Junkies (like myself). What better way to integrate into Marvel except to bring in the Kree?
That was kinda jarring. The Invaders? Kree? Yeah, just the idea took some getting used to (stodgy, I am), but the writing was great and the villain -- the Kree Grand Pursuer -- is VERY VILLAINOUS. OMG! I hate her SO MUCH! Well done, team.
The Original Human Torch is one of my favorite under explored characters of the Marvel Universe. They seem to abandon every idea they have for him (For the longest time he was supposed to have been refitted to become The Vision, believe it or not ... No, DON'T believe it, they changed their minds). So the opening sections of issue one focusing on HT were especially charming.
I'm not going to get into the plot, except to say the book finds its pace and grace early on, and by issue 3, I'm hooked.
Some of my favorite things:
1) The relationships: this team refers to each other as "Brothers" -- they went through a big thing together that others (Iron Man, for example) did not go through.
2) At one point in a flashback where he says something like, "Let's get those Ratzi's and we can go home!" The Human Torch thinks, "Did I ever actually talk like that?" My first thought was, if Roy Thomas was writing your dialogue than, yes, you talked like that. Love you, Roy!
3) The art, very effective, especially like the rendition of Namor.
4) Namor. He has a complicated relationship with ... everyone. Sometimes that's not very interesting. Here it is very interesting.
So, that's what I thought.
