So this can just be a general Spider-Man thread but also a shout out for some recommendations.
I have had an on and off relationship with Spidey for a while now. My introduction was the movies. Then I started reading the Ultimate series when it started but, like many of you could relate, this was when I was younger and my parents decided "Not buying you comics anymore. I'll throw these out too" Yeah thanks its not like Ultimate Spider-Man #1 is worth anything now *shakes fist* BUT ANYWAY. When I started reading comics again properly, I picked up the first trade of Ultimate Spider-Man and enjoyed it but it felt dated, most things early 2000's do. So I stopped trying. Then Amazing Spider-Man came out and it re-ignited my interest in the character. I picked up the Death of the Stacy's which I loved. I read Torment and Kravens Last Hunt which honestly I felt were too dark for what I was hoping to read in a Spider-Man story. I read the entire JMS run and while I enjoyed it, as he can confirm, it was kind of ruined by Marvel event interruption and left me really sad as I'd spent all this time so happy the Peter/Mary-Jane relationship was re-ignited only to be split up again by him wanting to save Aunt May (SO many problems with that whole side of things but lets not get into that)
I recently I wanted to give the Miles Morales stuff a go as I babysit for a 7 year old Sudanese kid who asked me "Why are there no superheroes like me" which, for a 7 year old, should never be something they thing about. So I went to pick up the first trade but thought to get some backstory, I'll pick up the whole Death of... run. Started with Prelude. And can I just say for anyone out there who hasn't read it, DO IT. It INSTANTLY made Spidey one of my favourit characters. Prelude alone was full of so much fun, moving moments. It doesn't require anything but basic Spider-Man knowledge and explains the rest. And the last page with the footnote "Next: The Death of Spider-Man" actually made me tear up before I'd even read the Death story. Then the Death story just wrecked me. I am now 3 trades into Miles story and not only love it but feel it is much more than a gimmick and is perfect for kids to read, especially a kid who wants a hero "like him" to look up to.
Anyway, this is all a long LONG way of saying, although I love Miles now and consider him on par with Peter, the death of Peter made me want more of him. I love the highschool, lightheartedness yet emotional qualities of Prelude. It was genuinely funny and felt like how actual highschool kids would act. So would anybody recommend just picking up the rest of the original Ultimate line? What are some great fun Spider-Man stories that are just Peter Parker? Not clones or evil versions or brain swapped versions. Just plain old Peter Parker. I get the feeling Bob will chime in with some Stan Lee/Steve Ditko stories and I really hope so because thats where I want to start but don't know where.
Anyway.
Bye.
