Not quite sure why season 2 has been received poorly. Actually I know why, and its the hype after season 1 not living up to everyones expectations for this one.
So far I've really enjoyed it. First episode really set the tone but episode 2 amped things up. Glad to see Taylor Kitsch doing something good. Loved him in John Carter but he really seems to generally be cast in crappy movies even though he's a great actor.
And I love Rachel McAdams doing something other than being the same old love interest.
Lots of complaints about the dialogue and script, but the over-the-top-ness of it doens't even match up to McConaughey's performance in season 1. Plus its a noir detective story, it's suppose to be dramatic and over the top in gloomyness. It walks a fine line between realistic and Sin City. Love it. Reminds me of 100 Bullets or Criminal.

I think the reason season 2 has been poorly received is because people were just expecting exactly the same type of show that season 1 gave us.
With a lot of Tv shows we get the inciting incident right at the beginning that brings the main characters together and then from then on we get character development and learn who these characters are. The first episode of this season pretty much turned that formula on its head and what we got was basically an episode showing each of the main characters in their every day lives and this informed us who they are and then in the last scene of the episode we get that inciting incident which brings everyone together and gets the story rolling. I think taking that reverse approach probably threw a lot of people.
I am enjoying the series so far and will continue watching, I just hope the show gets better reviews as I like the concept of the show and would like to see it continue for more seasons

I'm only a few episodes in, but so far I'm kind of meh on it. Rachael McAdams is good, Colin Farrel is quite good, Vince Vaughn is... I can't stand him. I think he's the real single point of failure for the show. The cinematography is very good but not as good as the first; but then again I think you can say that for the whole thing. It's good (minus vaughn) but not nearly up to the first season. My only hope is they fix the one problem the first season had, which is a supremely disappointing ending.
