This is a murder/ detective procedural / serial killer / cult series on HBO. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as they hunt for a serial killer over seventeen years in Louisiana. The series will be 8 episode long and is currently on episode 5. I would dare to say it is the best show on television currently. Is anyone else watching this show? If your are not watching it I highly recommend you do.

Easily the best show on tv. Is it only going to be 8? Or will there possibly be a season 2?

I've heard that it's going to be 8 episodes each season and that they will do each season with a different story and cast. They are going to use the same format as American Horror Story I believe.

Yeah, is using the same model as American Horror Story but without using the same actors/actresses (as far as I know) and is a great show! Som many twists and surprises....both Harrelson and McConaughey are just great.

It's my favorite TV show airing right now besides Hannibal. That's all I can add.

Finished the last episode on Saturday. Best TV I've witnessed in a long time.
What did everyone think?
TV that can balance inter-personal drama, occult conspiracy, buddy cop comedy, Lovecraftian outer-dimensional terror, and still deliver some of the most gorgeous images available needs to happen more often now the bar has been raised.

I almost with that the series hadnt come out till September or so of this year. Come awards season next year the show will probably be forgotten due to its early year run.

I'd be very surprised if anyone writes (nevermind plays) a character as compelling as either of Cohle or Hart. This is not a show that will live or die by an award so it won't matter, but it'll pick something up for sure. If not, we're in for a treat if anything resembling this quality is on TV between now and awards season.

I just got HBO again and marathoned this series on demand. I agree with lennyreid, I doubt (but hope!) there will be anything as well-acted and well-written as this on the air before awards season, especially since Breaking Bad finished its run. I saw some grumblings online about the finale but I loved it.

Anybody seen the well-timed accusations of plagiarism being levelled at True Detective writer, Nick Pizzolatto?
The claims being that he lifted lines and character traits from Thomas Ligotti's work. My feeling is that its a cynical smear campaign so close to the Emmys. Pizzolatto cited Ligotti's work as an influence two episodes in which lead me to his awesome short stories.

I read an article about the allegations, but quickly dismissed them as opportunistic (to put it kindly), and, as you mention, the timing was odd, to say the least. That first season was so phenomenal, from the writing to the direction to the art design to the acting, it'd take quite a bit to sway my overwhelmingly-positive opinion of it. It remains to be seen whether the second season can match the lofty heights of the first, but that was some ridiculously impressive and affecting art, well worthy of the love it's gotten.

Kind of strange casting news for season 2, Colin Farrell I can see to some extent, but not sure about Vince Vaughn. I had total confidence in Harrellson & McConaughey as dramatic actors (watch Harrellson in the People Vs. Larry Flint), but I'm not a Vaughn fan (other than Dodge Ball but that's more Rip Torn than anything). I am hoping it's another serial killer thing this season. That stuff is much more interesting than anything else. I know there are a ton of serial killer shows out, but not done by HBO!!

This was a great show, loved the actors, loved the directing, loved the writing... until... the end was not good. I mean it was far from awful but it was a big disappointment.

Season 2 casting has been announced. Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughan.
Aaaand the old and faithful internet is in a uproar about this for some reason? Anybody else feel the same way?
I saw someone say that the best thing about season 1 is that it came out of nowhere. It wasn't an adaptation. Brand new series that turned out to be amazing. Thats why everybody loved it. But now there are expectations for the next season that will never be reached no matter how good it is. If season one was this casting, and it was amazing, people would love it and say "Vince Vaughan was incredible", and then if season 2 was announced there would be an uproar about the casting Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
Either way, I love Colin Farrell. Especially in In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths. Rachel McAdams is great in what I've seen her in and Vince Vaughan has tried to play bad guy in the past in not great movies but I don't blame him for that. This is exciting news.
