I've always been curious about that series, but never picked it up. In fact I rarely ever heard it talked about. Was it good?

I've always been curious about that series, but never picked it up. In fact I rarely ever heard it talked about. Was it good? I think the series ran 72 issues and I've read the first 40 so far (I'm checking out trades from my local library, plan to pick up some hardcovers). Overall, I have really enjoyed it so far. The series takes place in the near future during a second civil war in the US. It focuses on Matty Roth, a 20-something journalist intern who gets dropped into Manhattan, which has turned into a demilitarized zone. The concept of the civil war is interesting because there are not set geographical boundaries for the most part. The civil war is a series of somewhat unified uprisings against the government in various parts of the country; the idea seems modeled after insurgent movements in the Middle East and North Africa. In the series, we see Matty Roth try to report on life in the DMZ and how he gradually comes to gain the trust of certain people and groups, and how some of those groups try to use him for their own gains via favorable reporting. I'll be honest that sometimes the ideas are stronger than the execution, but for the most part this is a rich world with complex characters. An additional issue is that although many of the female characters are well written, some of the artistic depictions are pretty "posey" and put the characters in positions that don't contribute to the plot. However, on the whole, I've loved the series and it provides a window into how people try to come together in the midst of a pretty chaotic situation.

That does sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to try it out. Thanks for the info man

I've seen trades for this series in my LCS, but haven't checked it out. When was this series published? I think it started late 2005 and finished in early 2012. Pretty good run!

The art looks pretty awesome as well, I think I'll have to find some trades and give it a try.

I read the first 5 issues of this series yesterday, and man was it great. I'm kinda surprised I haven't heard more about it.

I read the first couple issues and kind of fell off. I've been meaning to get back into it, maybe this is a good catalyst
