Sammie, That's a list with some crunch! From your introduction and tag line, I would have bet that you'd have had an album from this guy: While I do know Mikahl Thor's stuff, I don't know that it would make anyone's top 5....well except for him, I've heard he came with quite an ego lol, I'm a total 80s guy but my taste has NOT softened over the years, it's actually gone the other way. HOWEVER a good song is a good song, my taste actually varies quite a bit. Love some blue grass (my VA roots), some show tunes (my wife's influence), and some newer stuff (shhhh don't tell the kids) Having heard some of Thor's stuff back in the day, you are 100% correct about it not being on anyone's lists! You're also right about a good song; whatever genre it's in, a quality bit of song-craft will shine out!

1) Kind of Blue, Miles Davis Quintet 2) Lincoln, They Might be Giants 3) Under the Pink, Tori Amos 4) Lost Channels, Great Lake Swimmers 5) New York Tendaberry, Laura Nyro Honorable mentions…really, there are so many great bands I like to listen to, but J.J. Johnson's 2 volume Birdland set is just wonderful, there's an Afro-Cuban Jazz fusion outfit called NOMO that I'm crazy about. I like old Jimmy Buffet albums, especially White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean; Soviet Kitsch by Regina Spector; Ghost of the Great Highway by Sun Kil Moon. I could go on and on. Some excellent picks! I've listened to a few tracks by Sun Kil Moon and definitely want to check out more. With you mentioning Afro-Cuban Jazz, have you listened to the Buena Vista Social Club album? Big fan of that, and really enjoy Tori Amos as well. I keep coming back to Kind of Blue when I to get lost in music and take my mind off of stressful times. I absolutely love the Buena Vista Social Club album. Love it. I remember buying it when it was first released, and as I rarely do these days, I read all the liner notes while I listened. The accompanying documentary is wonderful and re-watchable. Kind of Blue is one of the beautiful, seminal, gateway albums that just opened up an amazing world of music to me. I've been a big Miles fan ever since my first listen, but I've also learned a lot about the music of his cohort, too, especially Wynton Kelly and Red Garland, two pianists I just love.

Any led zep fans? Already posted this In the music thread but am quite proud of it so stuff it you get it too!!! You don't know how long it took this absent minded man to learn all these lyrics off by heart!!! Here's me and my band doing a 6 piece acoustic rendition of Led Zeppelins Kashmir. Took months to learn full electric version so was nice to then strip it back. youtu.be/6eCBIlapUss

I'm just gonna throw it out there, but Phil Collins No Jacket Required on vinyl = #1.

This is tough because some albums have my favourite songs of all time on them but I always look at album as the album you can listen to from start to finish any time you want. Its the same with movies. Like I wish I could say Blade Runner is my favourite movie because I love so much about it. But I can watch it once a year if that and there are films it has influenced that I enjoy more than it.
So top 5 albums -
1. The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die: Anyone else would say Fat of the Land but I am too young to have experienced that album when it came out with all the excitement as I did with Invaders Must Die. I heard one song (Omen) from it the day before they played a show in Melbourne in 2009 I think it was and I bought a ticket instantly. That song still gives me goosebumps. And say what you will about electronic music, rave, all of that. These guys put on a better show than anybody I've ever seen. They have so much energy and make contact with you on such a level I feel like the only way to enjoy it is to flail my limbs about in an antigravity chamber. And very genuine and friendly guys. And with Liam Howlett in control, a classicaly trained musician, his arrangements are nothing short of classical, just with an electronic touch
2. Bouncing Souls - Comet: A fairly new album but blew me away nonetheless. Bouncing Souls are a Californian punk band who have been around forever but this album really hit me. From the first to the last track I can listen to it any day of the week. Specifically the song "Ship In A Bottle", the final song. I saw these guys twice when I was travelling the USA and the album had just come out so I hadn't had a chance to listen to it. Hearing that song twice live was enough and I knew the words by heart. Also was my song of choice when I went through a really bad patch with my now fiancee so I like to think it helped. These guys are also not a punk band that relies on the punk "look", overly political and even swearing. I cannot think of a song of theirs where I remember hearing them swear which is something most it not all punk bands do. Bouncing Souls just have fun with it.
3. Ignite - Our Darkest Days: Another California punk album. Bought this in a bargain bin on a whim once. Listened to it from start to finish at least 5 times that day, that being said its a very short album. These guys also aren't in it for the look and shock value. Zoli Teglas' voice is classicaly trained and throwing that into the mix of fast hardcore punk is something nice and different to hear compared to the usual screams and shouts of the others which don't get me wrong I also love but this is a nice change of scenery. The song Strength is the ultimate pump-you-up song at around 2 minutes in length but with so much to say and do. Also their cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" rivals that of U2's original.
4. dan le sac vs. Scroobius Pip - Angles: The simplest way to describe it is an Electro/Hip Hop album by an English duo. dan le sac does the music, Scroobius Pip the lyrics. But its so much more than that. His lyrics are poetic at the worst of times. Every song you forget you're listening to a song and reacting to the things he's saying with a "Yes! Finally somebody else who feels that way or notices those things!" And the music is a great mixture electro, hip hop beats, punk rock, classical, blues. And Scroobius Pip is also a gigantic comic book fan so thats always a plus. He also is very quick to reply to fans comments/questions/emails in a very non-generic kind of way.
5. Oblivion OST - M83: I never thought the soundtrack to a movie starring Tom Cruise would be in my top 5. But it does everything I love about film scores. I love so many film scores but there are ALWAYS those tracks you don't really enjoy or just skip altogether. This score seems to take all the good parts of sci-fi and epic film scores and compile into one. Has great soft personal moments, upbeat exciting moments. And the final track featuring Susanne Sundfor is beautiful. Highlights the main theme with equally thematic lyrics and is a nice icing on the cake.

They are a highly underrated band. If it wasn't for them, I'd have no working out music. Same with The Glitch Mob

Good God! This is most likely something that I'll have to update every once in a while.
Also, I'm going to take the liberty of assuming that this is a thread for Top Five Albums of the Moment, because otherwise I won't be able to sleep after hitting the "Create Post" button. Ha ha!
My Top Five Favorite Albums right now are as follows:
5. Sleepy Sun - Maui Tears 4. Warpaint - Warpaint 3. I Break Horses - Chiaroscuro 2. Failure - Fantastic Planet 1. Tool - Aenima - this album exists under a fixed position on this list. It is my favorite album of all time and will most likely never be removed from my top spot.

When will you be at the video store this weekend? I'll be in Patchogue working on my inlaws house so I'd love to pop in and meet you. I have a 4NZX unreleased album as well if you'd like

Nope! You can't make me do it! It's madness! Madness, I say! Have you ever heard the Adrien Belew record with Danny Carry on drums and Les Claypool on bass? It's power trio madness and I always push it on Tool fans! I think it's called Side B (or side A) but I can never remember

If you like that you should totally check out Danny's side project VOLTO!. It's heavy rock n roll riffs with a taste of jazz fusion. The drumming combinations are reminiscent of some of Danny's work with Tool on jam songs like Merkaba from "Salival". It's all instrumental and is quite the treat for the ears.
