Since Sinatra is on your list Bob, what was your view of Bobby Darin? He never gets love, despite in my opinion, having a voice that rivaled Dino and Frank. He had lots of hits and after his teenie bopper stage, during his crooner, lounge singer days, he may have been the coolest man on the planet. 'Beyond the Sea' and 'Mack the Knife' are two of the greatest songs ever penned. Aaron, Bobby Darin was a musical chameleon, able to effortlessly transistion between genres. As you say, he made great "teen idol" records like "Splish Splash", folk tunes such as "If I Were a Carpenter", and was one of the great "swingers" on those tunes you mentioned! Have you ever heard his "Down With Love"--killer!

Lists like these are always hard for me. I listen to a LOT of music from a lot of different eras and genres so coming up with a Top 5 is always hard for me. The hardest part usually though is separating my love of a song from my love of the album as a whole. I usually tend to love a lot of SONGS but sometimes not the entire album. So with that, here are my Top 5 albums of all time.
5. The Mountain Goats-Sunset Tree 4. Green Day-Insomniac 3. Michael Jackson-Bad 2. fun.-Aim and Ignite 1. Rush-Moving Pictures
Honorable Mentions: Panic! at the Disco-A Fever You Can't Sweat Out Boston-Boston Foo Fighters-The Colour and the Shape

My Bobby Darin back catalogue tunes that I sing along to are 'Artificial Flowers' 'More' and 'Clementine.' But looking at his albums on iTunes, there is plenty to choose from. His Vegas live albums are great too because he rifts during his sets.

That difficulty you describe is why I banned "Greatest Hits" albums, although that first Boston LP almost qualifies, considering they used to play every track on the radio!

That's what should be on your list! It's those pieces that make you want to revisit them!

Aaron,
"Artificial Flowers" is so sad--but so good! I love the conflict between the up-beat arrangement and the downcast lyrical content. I just pulled this up on You Tube, and it still gets to me!
(In some ways, I'm reminded of the similar disconnect in the work of She & Him, where a sunny exterior masks a darker heart; it's all very Dorothy Parker!)

Bob, I completely agree with omitting greatest hits albums, if for no other reason then it would probably be the best album for a few of my favorite artists (and in turn have them qualify for my list). That being said, I think the hardest thing for me was actually #4-5. #1-3 have been set in stone since 2009 and haven't budged an inch. The problem is figuring out how to list the other 5 on my list. The aforementioned titles are my Top 8 albums of all time (with Gorillaz-Gorillaz and Midas Whale-Sugar House coming in at 9 and 10) Depending on my mood, the weather or just what day of the week it is, the order changes. That's where it becomes hard. But I stick by it and I'm glad I could include the other albums (though now I've just inadvertently listed my Top 10...oh well) as an honorable mentions of sorts. Some music just needs a spotlight, even if it doesn't make the list.

Travis,
I agree about the #1--#3 thing! Those were easy for me, but the rest of the list took some finagling!
I'm glad you listed the extras! It never hits to put them out there!

Well, our first three customers have stepped to the counter! Beau: When I started the thread, I had to restrain myself from calling it "Top Five RECORDS", so I totally understand the idea of the new ways that music is purchased these days! Great story about your top pick, and a nice mixture on your list! I love Luther Allison--have you ever heard his "Now You Got It" LP from 1974? Huw: Not that I would, but it would be pretty tough to argue with any of your picks as being among the "best of the best" in the Rock Era! I do have a question though; you didn't list the artist for your #1 pick, and I seem to have forgotten, can you remind me who did it? Simon: I've got some research to do on your list, which is one of the cool things that this thread can make happen! From the retail side, when those Maiden albums came out, it was amazing the fervor that they were received with! We couldn't keep them in stock, and I couldn't begin to count how many tee-shirts and posters (black light ones, too!) that we would sell! I see that, counting everything, we have two votes each for "London Calling" and "Van Halen"; perhaps at the end of this, I'll see if we have some sort of consensus! (I would bet good money that Ms. Kurstin and her Theremin aren't on it!) My apologies, Bob! That's what I get for writing that up when just dozing off in bed. I have amended the post to include the artist. I'm sure it comes as no surprise that it's the Boss himself, Mr Bruce Springsteen. Glad you approve!

Okay, pop pickers, here's my top 5 albums of all time in ascending order: Rolling on in at #5: Quadrophenia by The Who.Cruising on down to #4: London Calling by The Clash. Moseying to the #3 spot: Ten by Pearl Jam Bopping along in the #2 position: Revolver by The Beatles And SLAM DUNKIN' in at #1: Darkness on the Edge of Town Keep on groovin' cool cats. Heyo, If your cable/dish provider has the channel Palladium, at 8pm CST tonight they are showing Quadrophenia. The bullet description shows it's the making of The Who's sixth album. Don't know if you get that channel or even if you'll see this before then but I was just watching it as I had some dinner and happened to see that was next, then saw your post....figured I'd mention it. - Beau Thanks a lot for the heads up dude! I'm in Wales in the UK so I won't have been able to see it. But I do have that (as well as Tommy) on Blu-Ray. Thanks again!
