Listening to the podcast the last few years I really want to get into Rucka's stuff since nobody has anything bad to say about his writing. However, everything of his I have picked up have all fallen kind of flat for me. Granted that is a small sample size, but who reads a lot of material from a writer they don't like?
So the big question is he a bit overrated or am I just not reading the right books? Are there books where he's definitely bringing his A Game vs. books where it seems like he's phoning it in? I'm trying to figure out if I'm just reading books where he's only bringing his B Game...

What books have you read by Rucka? I will say that I do believe some of his work reads better in trade than single issues (although the back matter alone in some of his single issues is worth the cover price), but maybe you need to explore his work through collections. He does play the long game with a lot of his stories, so you may need to stick with some books to feel the payoff, but I think his single issues are satisfying in and of themselves. Even if I wasn't a fan of the story, I never felt like he phoned anything in or gave a book less time and consideration that others.
I recommend reading Gotham Central, Stumptown, and Lazarus before trying to acquaint yourself with his superhero work.

The first thing I read was Lazarus vol 1 and it just didn't grab me. I thought well I'll give him another try and read the first couple issues of stumptown and that didn't grab me either. then I read the star wars "before the awakening" book and while it was OK it was nothing to write home about and I found some of the characterizations to be fairly off-model from how they were portrayed in the the film. I may have read others that aren't leaping to mind, but then if I did and I can't remember them maybe they didn't grab me either. yeah, admittedly a small sample size which is why I feel like I'm just not hitting the right books. or maybe not the right books for my taste... I may check out gotham central since I hear it's supposed to avoid batman himself (I'm not really a batman person) and sounds somewhat similar to powers, which I really liked until recently. thanks for the suggestion!

Troy,
I would suggest checking out Black Magick by Mr. Rucka and Ms. Nicola Scott, which has recently come out in trade. It's an atmospheric occult mystery, and this creative team will be doing every-other issue of the new Wonder Woman, so it can work as a preview of that series as well as being a great read on its own.

I don't think he's overrated, though I do have to agree with your opinion on Lazarus. Its good but for some reason I could never really get into it, as much as I wanted to.
I love almost all of his other stuff that I read though, I'm especially a fan of his superhero work.I would recommend his run on Punisher and the four or five issues that he did on Cyclops, as well as Batwoman Elegy and Wonder Woman Hiketeia, those are all excellent, in my opinion. And if you're not into that maybe try Queen and Country from Oni, which is a spy book.

Rucka has never let me down for what little I've read from him. Someone who has a similar story telling style though that is overrated? Warren Ellis. Not a bad writer by any means though...he just seems to drag stories out way too long.

I will agree that Rucka's work doesn't always connect with me either, but I think "overrated" can be a loaded term. He has won 3 Eisner Awards and a Harvey so somebody thinks he's pretty good. I would also recommend Gotham Central as well as adding Queen & Country from Oni to the list of recommendations.

Everything ive ever read from Rucka ive loved (Lazarus being my favorite series currently running), wheres Ellis for me is that writer that I constantly hear good things about but just doesnt really click.
