Thoughts about X-Men: Apocalypse, spoiler free
so there was some bad stuff, some good stuff and some great stuff. all in all i think is was a good movie that could have easily been great.
i just really wish this wouldnt have been about apocalypse because a) i think they didnt do him justice and more importantly b) his appereance as a fucking smurf destroyed a lot of the movie for me, he just looks so unimpressing and small if they just used the mountain from GoT for that role instead of little Poe Dameron this would have already been soo much better.
also the first hour kinda drags during the whole recruitment, i wish they cut that down and took more time for character stuff which really came short in the movie.
the last hour is really great though and i think the movie is a must watch for comic fans, because even though i wish they had more trust in the source material and didnt change so much, there were a few scenes that totally make up for that.

Overall I think I agree with you, I wasn't convinced by the recruiting scene but some of that might be that knowing the characters from my time [awhile ago to be fair] reading the X-Men books it felt quite off.
I thought the action sequences were good overall and yes Apocalypse is such a imposing character in the books in terms of his size [yes there is that one bit in the film I suppose] that he just doesn't look anything special in this - the design doesn't help it just doesn't work for me.
Some nice character moments on the other side of the scale though helped keep me interested and fair play to totally contradict myself but Quicksilver is so off model as a character but I love what they have done with him in this franchise and his speed effects are fantastic.
Honestly I think it is below par for the quality of Super Hero movies coming out now but does have redeeming moments as you say Good not Great.

I genuinely feel like this movie is terrible. It's the first movie I ever wanted to just get up and walk out of, only I was with a friend for their birthday so it wasn't an option. None of the humor in the movie hit for me, a lot of the scenes felt short or forced, characters were denied their time to shine, professor X & Magneto interactions have grown stale, Quicksilver felt thrown in there just because of his popularity from the last movie, among others but I don't want to get into spoilers.
On a happy note, I love that they finally did storm justice in the movie.
