I want to beg people to go and watch Dredd, this is easily the most underrated comic book movie of all time. it feels like a 80's action movie, but with more modern sens sensibilities. Karl Urban is amazing as the title character, but doesn't overshadow the performance of Olivia Thirlby as Anderson. Without getting into spoilers, her role could have easily become a derivative damsel in distress mixed with newbie foil, but both the actress and the screenwriter don't let that happen. Anderson is a fully formed character that we grow to know and love. Lena Heady (speaking of underrated) plays her character with all the ugliness and nefariousness she can muster (even Cersei Lannister would find Ma-Ma to be a little disturbing). The action is better than in movies with significantly bigger budgets, and the big set pieces never fail to awe. The movie comes as a whole feels incredibly streamlined and tight. Like watching a particularly gorey ballet, no movement is random or unnecessary. This is a truly great film, and I believe it compares favorably with the best of the marvel and fox super hero outings. If you haven't checked out this flick yet do yourself a favor. Another plus is that the 3D version comes free with the standard Blu Ray version.
Did I mention how good Karl Urban was?
In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but in his face.

I'm going old for my suggestions, some very old. Brazil - almost anything by Terry Gilliam is worth watching but in this you will see so many scenes you think you've seen before, except they were probably done here first. Local Hero - Not a super hero film but a quiet film about a town in a remote area of Scotland, that might not be a big sell but it is wonderful. I love the pace of this film. Stand By Me - I got my kids to watch this, with them sulking that how could I know a decent film for them. They were hooked. His Girl Friday - very old, black and white but I recently saw this on the big screen and it is brilliant. Cary Grant at his best. For a comedy there is darkness here. It seem to be about does he get the girl, but on the way, its about execution, pain, government corruption and desperation. Silent Running - if want to know where Wall E came from, its here.
A little more up to date, Little Miss Sunshine, Monsters, Black Sheep. Then go old again and watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
