Picked this up on a whim the other day after reading it was a retelling of the trials of Hercules/Heracles and absolutely loved it. I've said it before but Dark Horse are really coming out with more and more great books these days.
But I can't wait for volume 2. Art was amazing. It also felt like a more adult version of the Azzarello Wonder Woman. I'm curious though as to why the time period is a little hazy. Mainly because it doesn't come across as an obvious decision. At first I thought it was ancient Greece, then it looked like current times, then it went crazy sci-fi. But it doesn't stick with any one like Saga or something like that. And the details don't add to the story. Not really a critisism as I loved the book, but I would honestly have preferred a solid time period visually.
There aren't enough Greek Myth comics (of note) and those stories can be told and retold a million times. Azzarello's Wonder Woman does a great job at using the mythology. But this is really the only one that really sticks to the original story. I'm tired of books like Ody-C where its a twist on the original story. Just tell the original story. There's a reason they've lasted thousands of years. What I wouldn't give to see a current creative team tackle The Odyssey properly, or Theseus and the Minotaur.
This version of Hercules/Heracles is one of the best I've ever read. Can't wait for more and I hope more things like it come out.
