oh man was there a lot to read this week! the rest of the month is pretty quiet after this, so who knows the next time I have enough books to make a good list in a single week again!
Here goes! This week I read:
Brithright #7
Black Science #14
Chrononauts #3
Injection #1
The Maxx: Maxximized #19
Run Love Kill #2
Saga #28
Spider-Man 2099 #12
and I still haven't gotten a chance to crack open Sunstone Volume 2 yet! Ye Gods! Sorry if these aren't as descriptive as I would like; I'm trying to avoid spoilers.
So this was another tough week. Lots of great stuff waiting in my box and a lot of reading spread out over several days. Sadly the weakest of the bunch was the "finale" for Spider-Man 2099, and it was pretty weak as finales go. The last page was nice and it made for an interesting story but the whole thing kind of fell flat for me, especially as a finale. This was a series with a lot of potential that was never realized because spider-verse took a big chunk of the issues and then it got pre-empted by secret wars. Bummer.
Run Love Kill #2 was probably the second weakest of the bunch, not that it was bad or anything. I enjoyed it quite a bit, despite the flashbacks being a little jarring, but it just didn't have enough juice to compete with the other books that came out this week. The Maxx also continues to be a consistent great book and I'm a little sad I didn't stick with it back when it first came out (I actually fell away from comics entirely at that point, so it's understandable, but that doesn't mean I can't regret it). Again, a solid book that would make the tops against weaker competition.
Birthright #7 and Saga #28 were both kind of in the same slot for me. They both moved the story along a bit but were otherwise not stand-outs for me. I'm still loving both books and again, they would demolish weaker competition any other week.
Which brings me to the real competition in the top 3. Of the three of them, I would say Chrononauts was weakest, but man was it a fun book! The pace was excellent and by the end I was super excited for the conclusion in issue #4... oh yeah, I was totally blindsided by the fact his thing ends after the next issue. Super bummed as it's shaping up really well and has been a super fun series.
The top 2 are really close together for me and I'm not sure there is a clear-cut #1. I kind of want to do a 1A and 1B for the week, and maybe I just will:
1A is going to be Injection #1 by Ellis, Shalvey and Bellaire. I LOVED their run on Moon Knight and was really excited about this book coming in. As a #1 issue they did a real good job setting up the characters and I really liked how a couple of them were handled right off the bat. Even having just been introduced to them these characters ooze personality to me and I want to know what their deal is and what kind of madness Ellis is going to subject them to (and what kind of madness he already has, apparently). Some have said this is looking to be a slow burn, and I think I agree with that, but I think it'll be worth it. I can't wait to see where this thing goes.
1B has to be Black Science #14. This book has never slowed down and continues to amaze me. Not sure what else to say that hasn't already been said about this book except: in the letter column they mention they are in talks to move Black Science into "other media" and that makes me very excited indeed.
