Mic drop. Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello teaming up for the third and final part to Dark Knight. As someone who loves Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello who frequents this forum, I know this is probably a cringeworthy announcement to most. But I literally danced in my living room. For those more hopeful, which artist do you think will join this lineup? I'd love for Miller to do it but I doubt it will happen. Current Catwoman artist Garry Brown would be a great fit into that world I think. He deserves more big work. Greg Capullo would be amazing but again, doubtful. Either way. Great way to celebrate 30 years of one of the greatest books ever written.

I'm concerned that Frank Miller is involved in something titled 'the master race' given his nut job views. I think having Azzarello on the team will be it's saving grace. Good call on Garry Brown for the artwork. I'm definitely interested enough to pick the first issue up.

As some of you might be able to tell from my forum handle, I am a big fan of Azzarello's 100 Bullets run. In fact Wylie Times was my pen name for my college paper.
I would like to see his 100 Bullets collaborator Eduardo Risso on this. He can do those dark, dirty crime stories.

Miller has written so much of my favorite stuff that I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I like Azzarello's work I have been exposed to so co-writing as long as he doesn't capitulate to Miller on everything can only be a good thing.
I also think Miller not doing the art is a positive, I'm a comic's artwork addict - I'll totally admit that and Miller used to produce my kinda drug but his recent stuff just left me cold. Let's hope that he has one more big story in him and things come together, it would be nice if he could sign-off from the character with a tale that surprises and delivers on story.

I was hoping there would be some news regarding this at SDCC and they didn't disappoint (although an official release date wouldn't hurt)
"DC Entertainment began Comic-Con International: San Diego 2015 with a blockbuster announcement, revealing today that artists Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson will be joining living-legend Batman writer and artist Frank Miller and acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello in bringing the final chapter of the celebrated THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS saga to life.
“THE DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE” is the epic conclusion to Miller’s 1986 classic THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS trilogy – heralded by TIME Magazine as one of the 10 greatest graphic novels of all time – and its 2001-2002 follow-up series BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN.
THE DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE will be an eight-issue, comic book periodical, to be published monthly under the DC Comics imprint. Within each 32 page periodical there will be a special 16 page “Dark Knight Universe” comic affixed in the center. Each “Dark Knight Universe” comic will feature a rotating cast of special guest artists and characters.
“We went into this knowing that we had to give fans more,” said Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, Co-Publishers for DC Entertainment. “We’re pulling out all the stops to deliver an amazing conclusion to this exciting body of work. We hope it inspires the next generation of writers and artists, the way it has already inspired us.”
According to Kubert, "Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello have crafted such an incredible story for DKIII, as I am truly honored to be associated with them, this project, and Klaus Janson. We, along with the fans, are in for a great ride!”
"Any opportunity to work with Frank Miller is a happy occasion for me,” said Janson. “When we add the talents of Brian Azzarello and Andy Kubert to the mix, we have the ingredients to achieve something truly memorable. This will be amazing!"
Marking the 30th anniversary of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS original series, this periodical is slated for publication beginning in late Fall 2015."
Andy Kubert on art is amazing. And seeing Klaus Janson and Frank Miller's name on a comic always gets me excited. But it's those "Dark Knight Universe" comics I'm excited about. The fact that specific characters from that world will get the spotlight has me hoping my dream of a DKR Green Arrow story will finally come true!
I don't doubt this will sell well. But if DC pull out all the bells and whistles on this, variants and so on, I may go banana's and buy it all.
Frank Miller is my favourite person in comics and I don't hate his recent things like most, but also I've never been able to actually anticipate one of his comics coming out. This is exciting

Yes when I read the news about Kubert & Janson on it too I was fist pumping as I know not to everyone's tastes but I love the rough edge to Janson's inks and I was always a fan of both Andy and Adam Kubert. It sounds like there has been a lot of thought and input into this series than TDKSB as I think they were just chuffed to get Miller back writing this specific version of the character and let him go crazy literally.
I just think its going to be so good and the Dark Knight Universe could be interesting, we partially know what happened to some of the characters from TDKSB & TDKR but what would make some of these iconic characters step down & how did they capture others - smexy-stuffs

Been away from this forum and podcast for a long time just because of differing opinions but I couldn't stop myself from listening to what you guys had to say about this book.
Really pleasantly surprised.
But also, in line with the discussion of Strikes Again, as far as everybody saying how terrible it is: I underdstand that. Artwise its an ugly book. But especially now with DKIII out and just how much this is taking from DK2 regardless of peoples hate for it, its 100% worth a look if not just as a curiosty and a statement. Structurally and storywise, the first issue of DK2 is a solid comic with a lot of great set up and, at the time, relevant issues. But its most MOST important to know that halfway through Frank Miller developing that comic, 9/11 happened. Of course, NYC is Frank Millers home. And you can see the almost immediate change of direction the story takes. What went from a superhero mystery turns into an all out world devestating event. And I mean, as if that event wouldn't effect his storytelling and art. Because who cares about Batman when the worst thing in the world has happened to your home?
Its an interesting look at a person dealing with something horrible happening in the world through the format of a superhero comic. Its why, as horrible as people say Holy Terror is, I hold it up as one of the most honest pieces of art I've ever seen, despite even my disagreement with its execution.
I think DK2 is an important comic because its not like its terrible in the sense that its a nothing, throwaway comic made to stack shelves. It's one man dealing with crap the only way he knows. Doesn't have to be good. But its definitely one of the more personal Frank Miller comics out there.
And as a lead in to DKIII, its 100% important to read it. So much of III is taken from it. The Atom, Wonder Woman and Lara, Kandor. Superman's fate. My favourite thing about III so far besides the fact its a great comic, is that its forcing a lot of stubborn people to actually get past internet reviews and naysaying, and actually reading DK2 for themselves.
If you look at all of his work, which there is a lot of, only 3 books stand out as lesser in quality in public opinion: DK2, Holy Terror and All Star Batman and Robin. Literally everything else is held in high regard. So, personal viewpoints aside, its not exactly warranted to suddenly call a guy terrible and insane and Freddy Krueger for having 3 average books, a personal opinion and physical ailments.
In fact thats another aspect of this comic coming out I loved/hated. Seeing an unwell older man creating art again and people literally bullying him and calling him names because of how he looks? Awful. It's a blessing to the comic world to still have him around. Because of him, Batman wouldn't be what he is today. Comics wouldn't be. Comic book movies wouldn't be.

He said a lot of horrible things. People are allowed to dislike the guy and his work without being thought of as 'bullying' him.

He said a lot of horrible things. People are allowed to dislike the guy and his work without being thought of as 'bullying' him. And people are also allowed to support the man, and learn to forgive and move on.

Yep, I understand that, but what I said was "Seeing an unwell older man creating art again and people literally bullying him and calling him names because of how he looks"
A lot of "clever" people out there making that same old Freddy Krueger joke, if you'd call it that, every time DC posts a promotional article/Tweet etc about Miller and this book. I know its a lot to ask the internet to be mature. But name calling a sick person is another story.

I am enjoying this book way more than i anticipated! It is currently my favorite read everytime it comes out!
It is getting mixed reviews, which i really disagree with the negativity towards it. After reading the first 2 issues i was hooked!
ALTHOUGH i saw the mini green lantern preview book that will be included with i think ish 3-4, and holy crap, it had possibly the worse JR JR art i have ever seen! And i am a gigantic Romita JR fan, he always made me feel the same way Kirby's art does when i read his stuff. I have been yelled at for saying that, but what i mean is that Kirby and JRJR more so than any other artists, really give me that oldschool "comic booky" feeling. Its comics, i dont care if everything is proportionate. If i want real life, i will look outside the window. Anyways, my point is i LOVE JRJR art, ALOT.... But that GL DKIII art looks like 1st grade Jonathan Soko art, its that bad! I can not believe what i was looking at, what were they thinking? What is DC thinking???!!!!

I picked up the first book and dug it. How's the rest of the series? Worth picking up?

I would say it's a mixed bag, I think the artwork has been solid & good. There are some personal high points in the dialogue from time-to-time Miller really nails Batman's internal thoughts but the story itself is leaving me a bit like the current issue... cold.
That said I am still very much onboard with the series as I like the development of Bruce & Carrie's character and their current situations both mentally & physically. I'm hoping that there is more to The Master Race, some twist we won't see coming or clever story yet to be revealed.
If you are a fan of Miller's previous works then it's a no brainer get it! just Bruce's internal monologue alone will make you smile. If you are on the fence with his recent or stuff in general it might be worth waiting for the trade.

After a reasonable start, I'm really struggling with Millers thinly vailed prejudice in issue 3. It's difficult to just overlook it and read it as a story given Millers history.
