So, I know it's before the new 52, but one of my favorite series of all time, DC or otherwise, is Gotham Central. It features two of my favorite writers, Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker, and has Michael Lark on art (now doing the art on Lazarus with Rucka writing).
I love the street level focus on the series, and how it doesn't depict all the cops in Gotham as corrupt, but as diverse people with a genuine desire to make Gotham better, and a mixed view of Batman. The first story arc is a little tough to get through as it focuses on the kidnapping/murder of a teenage girl (now that I have a daughter, I have a much harder time with stories that focus on kids getting hurt or killed), but there is a lot of great material about the police officers having to abide by rules that don't apply to Batman, and resisting the urge to call on his help. Just a lot of nuance and I enjoy Michael Lark's art as it supports the story without unnecessary flashes that take you out of the story.
Anyone else picked up this series?

I'm only half way trough reading this but its already of its already one my favorite DC series(not that i've read a whole lot of DC). Its like you're reading a really good cop show like the Wire or something like that only its in the Batman world, which i think is awesome. The best story arc i've read so far is the Joker one which is real intense and well done. Haven't read much of Brubaker but Rucka is one my favorite writers, him and Lark are killing it right now on Lazarus.

Wasn't aware of this series but what I have heard right here has made it sound very interesting. I may have to check it out.

The stories show how even the people you think are "good cops" have flaws and problems, and how the "bad cops" can occasionally do the right thing, even if sometimes with not the best intentions. Plus I think the series treats villains in an interesting way because you see how the cops have to react to what supervillains do, land the terror/fear these villains create among the populace. And I agree with your take on Lazarus, it's one of my favorite series right now.

I'm guessing in anticipation of the upcoming "Gotham" premier, Comixology is having a "gotham central" sale where you can get the whole 40 issue run for $40. There are a few other runs for sale as well but now would be a good time to get caught up on Gotham Central and see if the TV show is similar at all.

I enjoyed everything about this series...concept, writing, art. I was so disappointed when it came to an end. Everyone read it and enjoy and let's all hope they do something similar again.

You had me until "The first story arc is a little tough to get through as it focuses on the kidnapping/murder of a teenage girl" That disturbs me for the same reason that you had a problem with it. Since I became a father 11 years ago I just can't read or watch things where kids are involved. It pulls at my heart strings too much.
It sounds great based on everything that I heard about it. I just don't know if I can do it.

The first two issues focus mostly on a case involving Mr. Freeze, so maybe you could read those and then skip to Issue 6.
