Issue #177: Batgirl Variant, New Costumes and Southern Cross

LOTS of stuff went down this week and all before we recorded so there is quite a bit to go over. There’s the controversy over Rafael Albuquerque’s Batgirl variant cover and The Killing Joke. There’s the post-Convergence costumes for Wonder Woman and Superman that were revealed (spoilers: they’re awful). And then there’s certain higher ups over at Image ranting about the “vocal minority” on Twitter and then pulling a very Rob Ford-esque apology. So, you know. Stuff happened. If you get a chance, make sure to check out this blog by Adam Gorham regarding the male fanboy perspective on the Batgirl variant controversy and The Killing Joke. We get into everything throughout the show and then there’s the good ol’ regular segments in which we talk about comics. These ones in particular… Lightning RoundThe Surface #1, Deadly Class Vol. 2, Sheltered #15, Operation S.I.N. #3, Saga #26, Spider-Gwen #2, Thor #6, Spawn Resurrection #1, Powers (TV show). Book of the WeekHellbreak #1, Howard the Duck #1, Ninjak #1, Silver Surfer #10. Shared Book of the WeekSouthern Cross by Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger

Hey Steve buddy, maybe you could consider not spoiling the whole book when you choose it for your pick of the week.

To echo Steve: when I think of wonder woman, I think of Linda Carter, not this. This looks like a Rogue costume, and he's, the blades are lame.

Hey Steve buddy, maybe you could consider not spoiling the whole book when you choose it for your pick of the week. Yeah I kind of had the same thought about The Sculptor from a couple weeks back, just didn't know how to word it without sounding snarky. At the start of the review I thought "I will buy this" but by the end I knew the whole story. I mean it did save me 40 bucks. But still.

That Book of the Week segment was really, really interesting, 'cause I didn't pick up any supernatural elements or overt creepiness from Southern Cross; no horror vibe, certainly nothing that would remind me of Event Horizon or Alien. I guess I need to go back a reread it! It didn't occur to me that the bulk of the series would happen on the ship; for some reason I was in the mindset that the heart of the mysteries at hand were at the location to which she's traveling, but now that I think more about it, it totally makes sense as a Murder On The Orient Express sort of story. I'm gonna keep all of that in mind when I read through it again; maybe that'll help it feel a little more vital the second time through.

Apologies if I've spoiled any books for anyone in either this, or shows from the past. Usually, I'm pretty good about that sort of thing, but sometimes I get so excited about a book that I start going on and on. I'll try to keep everything in check, but understand that from time to time something is going to slip out. Hope you all enjoyed the show regardless.

When I listen to the show (any comic podcast really) I just accept there's a possibility I'll get spoiled somehow, I think you did fine with your review of the book.

Then it really popped out to me. It's subte but definitely there in the background.

Some level of spoilers are inevitable in any review that goes deeper than I did/didn't like the book and I don't think you've ever given enough away to make me lose interest in reading something for myself.

Good show, guys.
I liked the way you handled the whole Batgirl variant controversy, and i pretty much agree with what was said.It was beautifully drawn, but man, that look on her face(especially the eyes)really freaked me out.I hope this doesn't affect Rafael Alberqueque too much, since he's one of my favourite artists.
As for the new costumes, i haven't seen much of the new Wonder Woman costume, but what i saw wasn't bad, Superman looks like Superboy(like you guys said), and i really don't like what i've seen from the new Batman costume, looks to me like a blue Iron Man suit with bunny ears.
Oh, and you guys were right, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is awesome!Especially that intro(They're alive, dammit!)

I mean he did Spoil the entire ending to Hellbreak

I actually like the new designs of Wonder Woman and Superman. I think you guys go a little overboard with the DC criticism most of the time.
And I also liked the variant cover, I was hoping to grab a copy and I never get variants. I can understand why some people don't like it, but I don't think they should have pulled it had Albuquerque not requested it. Sets a precedent when social media can force publishers to pull artwork.

We've heard your critiques on spoilers for the books and we are talking about it. I don't care how much you criticize us, but I hate seeing people arguing with each other about stuff like that.
If you feel like we spoil too much that's valid, and if you feel like we don't that's also valid. We will be chatting about it internally to see how we feel about it. Thank you guys for caring so much about the show!

Spoil stuff for me, it's no big deal to me. If a big turn on or off to a book is the ending, it HAS to be discussed to give an accurate review.
As for the costumes, I think they're all pretty terrible but they won't last too long, so no big deal.
The Surface #1 was WEIRD. I'm going back for #2 so I guess it did its job.

People spend good money on their books and value being surprised by what the story brings.
I can't tell you how annoyed I am that a lot of media outlets completely ruined TMNT #44 for me. I enjoyed the book regardless of that, but I'd have enjoyed it much more if I'd been taken by surprise by it.
