We all have favourite writers and artists and so on. But sometimes you hear an interview with one and their personality can either enhance your love for their work and them as creators, or diminish it. And sometimes there is a creator who is so enjoyable to listen to or follow on Twitter but you just don't enjoy their work (Gail Simone for me. She's hilarious and so interesting, but I don't like any of her comics as much as I try)
But my two absolute favourites are Scott Snyder and Brian Michael Bendis. And both for very similer but also complete opposite reasons. The similar reasons are because they have a passion for comics and storytelling.
So many creators I've listened to who's comics I've enjoyed have since come across as only caring about the business and the process or even simply using comics as a platform to voice an opinion. And while I may enjoy their comics, they don't seem to care about the characters or the story they are telling. Or they treat their Big Two work as just bread and butter with no passion and only put their passion into their creator owned books. Snyder and Bendis, regardless of taste, have so much invested in the worlds they create and talk about them with so much passion regardless of the publisher, it makes me enjoy their work even more than I did because, as the saying goes "it was made with love."
The opposite sides are that Snyder seems like such a humble person. Every interview I've heard him mention his anxiety and problems like that and he uses it in his writing making it feel even more personal. He talks about his characters like they are real people and never treats his DC work as if its less personal than his creator owned books. He never comes across as overconfident and always seems to think he can do better, even though what he does I think is always the very best. I just want to hug the guy.
Bendis is such a huge personality on the other hand and so outspoken and confident, and knows he pisses off fans but doesn't care because he is as much of a fan as the rest of us. And he knows how stupid fans can be and laughs at their threats and anger they send to him on Twitter. Which I love so much. What he writes may irritate readers, but on the same token another fan could write something and annoy everybody just as much. But he talks about his characters the same as Snyder, with so much passion. Especially is Ultimate Spider-Man work. EVERY SINGLE character in that world he seems to love and treat as real people. And he's the only reason I still read any Marvel book at all.
One thing I've noticed they both do is talk about the characters they write using their first name eg: Bruce, Miles. It's not the title of the book. Its the characters.
Who are some other writers out there with that same passion? Because some people like myself will avoid certain books because they don't know the writer or care for the character, but that extra ingredient of love in the world/character/story makes it all the more appealing.
