I just finished reading 'In The Heart of the Sea' which inspired Moby Dick and is also coming out as a film this year. Great book if nobody has read it. Anyway, it got me thinking on Moby Dick as a movie.
I've read Moby Dick. But I count myself on the side of I appreciate the book, I absolutely love the storyline, the character of Ishmael and Ahab's madness and the classic revenge tale but I just find the bulk of the book very, very boring. I know it wasn't written to be an entertaining adventure, but that is the only part of it I enjoy.
I think no film version will ever satisfy Herman Melville purists, but the bones of the story of Moby Dick make for such an entertaining movie.
I saw the Gergory Peck film when I was younger and remember loving it but as a kid of course I loved a story about a giant whale attacking a ship. But I can't recall if it's that great of a movie. The Patrick Stewart TV mini-series is awful, I saw it recently and couldn't even finish it. But then I saw today there was another one starring Ethan Hawke and William Hurt which I didn't even know existed. Has anyone seen it and is it worth a watch? The cast seems amazing but the fact it was straight to DVD has me worried its not very good. And you can't trust Amazon reviews anymore.
