Went into this comic a bit wary. The Brian Wood book wasn't terrible, but it was really bogged down by "there's not a lot we can do because everything has been done". And it just didn't feel like Star Wars. There were a lot of character moments and lots of brooding, but not a lot of fun to be had.
But literally the second I opened to the first page a big goofy smile hit my face. I don't know why but I just was not expecting the long time ago... opening crawl beginning and it was perfect. I was sold just on that. John Williams was there the whole time.
The characters feel exactly like the characters. The story is fun and it feels like a Star Wars movie. I could imagine this as a follow up to IV. Definitely adding this to my pull list.
This is now only 1 of 2 Marvel books on my list (Miles Morales and this feel like the only books that will never be interupted by crossovers and events and creative team changes) which leads to my only concern: Marvel books seem to 9.9999 times out of 10 start really strong. Especially ones with amazing creative teams. But very quickly the creative team changes. Mainly the artists. At times it stays consistent like Daredevil where the artist change happens but the style stays the same. But alot of the time its really jarring and feels like "Okay we put all out effort into those first 5 issues. Now lets just move on to the next thing". Also John Cassaday is one of those artists that, while amazing, has lots of delays in their books (Planetary, Astonishing X-Men) despite not working on much else at the same time.
I'm hoping the fact that this is a Star Wars book coming out the the year of the new Star Wars film means it will stay strong. Or at the very least should there be art changes, somebody as noteworthy or similar as Cassaday be brought in.
