Hi,
My name is Stuart,
I live in England and come from a small town and when I was young I used to love Spider-man and would pick comics any time I could manly Spidey, judge dredd and X-men as they are all I could get in my local store. I could not get a lot as we had no comic store anyway close and this is before the internet. But I have always been a huge movie fan and in 2007 I started attending cons and with this started slowly getting back in to comics and then in about 2009 I joined the Iconic Legion which is a cosplay group that does charity work ( that's me dressed as Bane in my Avatar pic collecting for the royal legion in London) and being around like minded people I got really back in to graphic novels but kept away from buying individual issues until almost a year ago when I got back in to it strongly and I'm loving everything about it. (Except the hole in my wallet from my pull list) but my question is what books ( individual issues, trades, or graphic novels) should I read that I have missed in my hiatus??
i stopped reading about the time of Spider-man identity crisis have read a lot of stuff since the launch of the new 52. I like super hero books from the big two but I'm willing to try anything....
Ill finish by saying glad to be here hello to everyone and look forward to hearing your suggestions....

I won't have that much to tell you because I've only been reading for about 2 and a half years. The vertigo stuff in the early 2000s is really good. Y: The Last Man is my favorite series of all time. Pride of Baghdad is written by the same guy and thats also really really good. You also said you read a lot of the new 52 stuff, you should check out some of the pre new 52 stuff like Scott Snyders Detective comics. Scott Pilgrim also came out in that time gap, if you like goofy ideas, music or nerd culture you should give them a read.
So i know its not a lot but its all really good and worth a read.
Any way welcome to the Forums you'll have a lot of fun here

I have recently read Scott Snyders Black Mirror loved that! The contrast between Grayson as Batman rather then Bruce. I'll keep an out for Y: the last man and Pride of Bagdad def need to branch away from Marvel and DC a little bit ( but not to much) I did not like the Scott pilgrim movie at all will I like the book?

I love Dick as batman so much, i think Snyder really captured his voice.
If you didn't like the Scott Pilgrim movie you most likely won't like the comics there pretty similar.

Stuart, Welcome to the Forum! I normally throw the welcome mat out over at "Introductions", but this is as good a place as any to say "Hi!" You're sure to get plenty of helpful recommendations around here (and some righteous condemnations, too!), and if you're looking to read Big Two super-heroes, I'll add my two cents by touting the new version of Ms. Marvel by G.Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona. It's fairly new (only 9 issues in), and the first trade was just released, so catching up is relatively easy...and very rewarding!

Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel are both on my list to get after hearing you rave about them in the podcast. I have just finished the first Trade of Fractions Hawkeye which I loved so have the second trade to read next and then I'll hit them both up. Thanks for the warm welcome Bob.

Stuart, It's always a pleasure welcoming a new family member! Matt Fraction's Fantastic Four and FF are also well-worth picking up, and are fairly well self-contained between the two books. The start together, drift apart, and then finished with final issues that are best read together, with both open to the same pages!

Happy reading!

I'm not sure for you location but for newer folks I would highly recommend most things from BOOM! that are not ongoing.
4-8 issues quick in and out stories that are supremely crafted and well executed.

Hey Stu - as your in the UK take a look for the new Judge Dredd series - one new 200 plus page hardback every 2 weeks with the very best of Dredd stories - the 1980's Apoclaypse War is in the shops now and in a week's time it's the fantastic 2006 epic 'Origins' (detailing just that). At the price (£10 for a slick hardback is insanely cheap) it's the best way to catch up on some of the best UK comics in the last 30 years.. Available in newsagents, WH Smiths and all other good thrill-power merchants... www.judgedreddcollection.com/And if you're a lapsed reader of 2000AD no better time to check out this Freebie from 2000AD - the first issue of some of their most popular characters.. lots of old 70s / 80s strips and a few new things to show you what they've been up to since you've been gone. Shakara is quite possibly the most insance Sci-Fi comic ever (yes Prophet and ODY-C fans, way way more insane than those) shop.2000adonline.com/products/digitalgn_2000_ad_origins

Welcome Stuart! It is an exciting time to be into comics right now. I hear you about the pull list and wallet for sure! I got back in around when the New 52 started. If you havent checked out Aquaman when it started...you should. Johns run on it was epic! Of course the current Batman run has been amazing. What I have been doing though is going back and reading older stuff. Superman Red Son is amazing! I went back and read a lot of the Marvel cosmic stories like Annihilation which wad great. I get a lot of trades and graphic novels from my local library. You can have them bring in titles for you and its free. I am not sure if that is how it works where you are but look into it. Also check out Geoff Johns's Green Lantern run...fantastic stuff. For some Indy titles, I would recommend checking out Punk Rock Jesus by Sean Murphy....Black Science by Rick Remender (if you like high action sci fi) and also Rat Queens...and I never was much into fantasy stuff until I read Saga...you cant go wrong there. There are several Marvel titles I am loving right now also. Guardians Of The Galaxy, Rocket Racoon and Daredevil. Check a few of those out if you can. Let us know what you like. Would be interested to hear if any of these hit that spot for you. Have fun !

I'd recommend Invincible by Robert Kirkman. It has plenty of nods to the Big Two but is very much its own universe.

I'm also new to the forum and I just got back into reading comics again after being away for almost 10 years. I've been trying to catch up on what all the New 52 and all the Marvel reboots/renumbering over the last few years. Gotta say that I'm totally digging Batman right now. I've been checking out various titles here and there and haven't really locked into anything just yet. The great thing is my girlfriend is getting into reading comics and it's nice to be able to swap and check out titles I might not normally pick up. One of the other things I did was check out Scribd which has been a great source of TPB to catch up on. I finished dang near the entire run of IDW's Ghostbusters and four volumes of Locke & Key (awesome read).
