Well it's that time of the year again! Time to dress up, consume ridiculous amounts of sugar, get drunk - or all of the above, depending on your age/maturity.
It's also a great time to have a cosy night in and watch some fun, scary movies!
I'm sure all the classic 80s slashers will be on tv - Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street etc and no doubt I'll be watching a few, but are there any others that you make a tradition out of watching at Halloween? Maybe there is a film you have been meaning to watch for a while and will take this time as an opportunity to do so? Perhaps you know of some underated or obscure titles to share with the Talking Comics community? Feel free to enlighten (and frighten) us
As my own recommendation, if any of you haven't already seen it, I'm going to suggest The Cabin In The Woods. It was released a couple of years ago and sort of just passed me by. It was only a few months ago that I bought it on Blu Ray and only a few days ago that I finally got around to watching it. It has received critical acclaim and great reviews but I still think it isn't exactly a movie a lot of(enough) people talk about.
I feel like it must be very difficult to create a decent horror story these days, in any medium - be it film, book or video game, purely because it seems like everything has already been done. There are occasionally elements which are fresh and brand new that are introduced into horror stories and they're great. The only problem is that once people realise how great they are, they become overused to the point where they are inneffective and predictable. Everyone hops on to the same idea until it is burned out and then the search for the next big thing recommences.
In modern horror movies in particular, there is a formula that appears to be almost consistent throughout. 5 or 6 teenagers/college students, go to an isolated location, partying, sex, then suddenly bad stuff starts happening and they are killed off one by one. The characters are always the same - the shy girl (usually main character), the...not so shy girl (you know what I mean), dumb jock boyfriend to said girl, intelligent/nerdy guy/girl and maybe an oddball character. They make ridiculous decisions, the jumpscares are predictable and you just know that there will be a twist at the end.
Cinemasins recently uploaded a video basically saying the exact same thing I have above, with some more detail and examples, worth checking out:
There are actually a few clips from The Cabin In The Woods in that video but what they didn't mention is that this film is very much aware of what it is doing. I won't spoil anything because it's a really fun movie and definitely a case of more than meets the eye. You will go through stages whilst watching it. They will be:
"Oh here we go, another typical horror movie. Yep, same old characters. Same old setup."
"Wait..what? What the hell is going on?"
"This is so weird."
"That movie was pretty damn awesome!"
It's just fun to watch and if you're looking for a movie to enjoy this Halloween, I suggest this one!
